January 2018 Watercolor Challenge - Lane End Farm

This is a commission I did as a present for a local farmer at the request of his wife. A typical West Lancashire farmhouse.

Reference Image Library version

My painting quarter sheet I think. I took the photo on a very dull day and managed to get some sunlight into the painting.

Hope you enjoy the challenge.

Doug

Beautiful scene and I like your take on it. A little early though

Here's my sketch. Hopefully I don't bugger it up too bad with the paint.

Before you start applying watercolour check the perspective of the house, the right side should slope to a vanishing point on the right and the left to the left.

Hi Doug, Happy New Year! I enjoy your challenges even though I haven't taken part in quite awhile. Your watercolor of the reference photograph is lovely. There is a place we visit near Woodbine, New Jersey, that is very similar. A slice of England right here in the states.

I did a sketch as well and I plan to start painting at noon eastern time. I cut out the building on the left only because I didn't start the drawing in the right place. Live and learn.

I made a mess of it! I'm going to have to try again and go a little slower, a lot slower.

Doug, those bricks you did are awesome. You say you painted on a quarter sheet. What size is that? Please don't tell me you got all that detail on a 3" X 4" piece of paper.

A quarter sheet is 15x11.

The bricks are done with a small flat brush. Here's a demo of how I do them.

I love your version Doug. It has so much life and colour, much better than the photo.I will have a go at this too as I have time on my hands this month.

Doug,

Thanks for the advice on the perspective. Once you pointed it out I realized how far off it was.

How do you get the cream white color on the house side? Best I could come up with was a yellow brown, mustard looking color.

Re: January 2018 Watercolor Challenge - Lane End Farm

Much better but you should draw perspective lines to a vanishing point to get things right. The cream cenent rendering on the gable end is simply burnt umber as a very pale wash.

See the classes link in my signature and look for the one on Street Scenes, it covers perspective in depth.

Doug
