Dusk on the River Wye

Hello everyone,

Haven't painted for a couple of months due to illness but very pleased to get back into action today. This watercolour is based on the River Wye near Symonds Yat about 4 miles from home. With friends we made a visit to the Saracens Head pub (just out of picture) a couple of days ago on a sunny lunch time. When we got home, I was going to paint the scene as was but, thinking about it, I thought it might work as a dusk scene with dark trees against the sky and the little yellow hut illuminated by imagined back light. So this is how I painted it this afternoon. There are a couple of barges/houseboats tied up to the wall and a few deserted tables and benches.

Hope you think it works. Wishing you all a happy and healthy 2018.

Mike

Good to see you well enough paint again Mike, you live in a beautiful place.

I found the lighting confusing, I read the sky as looking west which put the foreground shadows wrong, but I assume the golds in the sky are reflections of the sunset behind the viewer.

A very nice scene at the river with long shadows and great light!
I was worried about your long absence.
I wish you a good recovery and a happy new year 2018!

Re: Dusk on the River Wye

Thank you all for your good wishes - much appreciated.

I have missed painting a lot and hope I shall be able to continue in 2018. One of the problems now is a shaky painting hand. Perhaps that will force me to paint 'looser' - no bad thing.

Doug - looking about north-west I think. The confusing foreground shadows are because I imagined some artificial light from behind - a floodlight perhaps.

A wonderful atmosphere you have created with this picture Mike. The light and shadow draw you right in to the pub. I know the shaky hand problem and it is a challenge that can get one painting in a different way, all good. I love what you have done here, the glow in the sky. Stay well and all the best in 2018.
