Another winter sunrise

This is my final snow scene I think, as it's proving to be one snowy winter where I live in Collingwood, Ontario. I need to work on a cheery watercolour! This is a pen and ink and wash, based on a photograph by Budz Art of Paint My Photo (PMP) and used with permission. Image size 8" x 10" on 140 lb Arches cold pressed, using a variety of Stadtler pigment liner pens. For some reason, my scanner won't work, so this is an image from my iPhone 7+. Comments and suggestions always welcome of course.

Happy New Year, John

Re: Another winter sunrise

Excellent John, very nice !
I love the way you bring your mastery of watercolour washes to the party, they do not dominate the pen work but the subtlety achieved by them is a real eye opener.
You understand that most P&I artists using wash will use dilutions of ink to get the tones on Bristol board but you set the balance slightly differently, using quality watercolour paper & W/C paint (to say nothing of a couple of years experience handling W/C paint )
I think this is the most succesfull P&I you have posted here to date.
Very well balanced.
Mike

Re: Another winter sunrise

Thanks for dropping by everyone.

Doug: Glad you like this one. It was fun to do, using some watercolour techniques such as liquid masking and some wash to make the snow stand out.

Mike: Thanks. Although I'm an infrequent pen and ink contributor, I do enjoy the challenge, and I learn a lot from comments on my stuff, plus watching what other people choose to do. My own feeling about this project is I'm battling the tendency to turn this into a fully fledged monochrome watercolour with added emphasis using pen and ink. I think I've pushed this as far as I dare, before losing the special zing that true pen and ink only gives to a project. Mind you, with a snow scene it made sense to use the watercolour technique of liquid masking and graduated washes to empasize negative painting, but more experienced pen and ink people might disagree. I suppose it's a matter of personal preference. At my advanced age, I paint purely for private and personal creative pleasure, so I don't have to worry about selling anything. BTW - I used hot pressed paper, not cold pressed as I originally indicated. I tried Bristol board but it simply isn't for me, especially where washes are concerned. I will post the ocassional pen and ink, but I must admit, I will have to overcome my natural tendency to let watercolour exerience spill over.

Happy New Year to all my pen and ink friends.

John

Re: Another winter sunrise

So cold!
I like the range of tones, however acquired! ........ I like the simplicity of the marks ...... all of it hangs together, balanced beautifully, to give a most pleasing image.
Keep 'em coming John!

Happy New Year.

John, this is absolutely gorgeous! Your textures are interesting and those background trees are beautiful in their simplicity.

Re: Another winter sunrise

Again - thanks, everyone. A fun project although too much of this stuff is right outside my studio window! I'm planning a watercolour of a nice warm Fall scene with distant vistas of ripe corn, sunny skies and weathered barns. I can dream, can't I!

Re: Another winter sunrise

well done...dreaming of fall would be nice but with the kind of cold we have here now, I think my brain is too frozen to dream of anything

The balance of details against the smooth areas of wash are very good.

Fine piece. The consistency of your line work is awesome to say the least.

Very nice
