Re: January 2018, Challenge and chat!

Hope everyone is doing well on our first day of the New Year. I know it's a bit nippy here. We woke up to -18F (-27C) with a windchill of -29F (-33C).

It's so cold! Over the last few years we've replaced all our windows but for two. Last night one of them froze and then broke! That was a bit of a chilly surprise!

Brrr. But I think it's only supposed to last for a couple more days.

That's a castly looking one too. I'm a sucker for turrets.

The winter landscape is a real challenge for me!! 5x7,started off with wc, lightened with white ac, added pen and touched up with cp. Just didn't get that glow which attracted me to it in the first place.

Some great choices for this month! Sorry about your frozen and broken window!

Christel, that's a great rendition of the icy river scene! Do you think there is maybe too much green?

That looks great, I think some more warm tones would really set it off even more. I find ice an snow a challenge.

It's so cold here, I think we should all go visit Christel.

Re: January 2018, Challenge and chat!

Try those colors see if it helps. Or put white gouache in a mister spray bottle and spritz white 'snow' all over it. Pretty sure you'll have to use an opaque. Do you have any Cheap Joe's Coastal Fog? It is perfect and is a combo I think of white + raw umber...don't have my paints here at home to look.

The owl of Penny's won me over so he is sketched on scrap wc paper that had various paint marks on it, then when done splattering w/ burnt sienna and sepia watercolors on Canson. Also he is now on a branch rather than that stump
Size is 7x3.5

Lovely owl Kay!
A small change on a small painting makes a huge difference

The painting looks less blue than the photo

Re: January 2018, Challenge and chat!

It's too cold to do that snowy icy river scene so I did this one with the straw hat a while back. Watercolor and Pitt pen. Thanks for looking.
Kay, like your owl.
Christel, you captured the icy river scene very well.

Re: January 2018, Challenge and chat!

I hope your weather isn't too bad, Lil. It looked nasty from what the news channels were showing!

Your hat looks beautiful and so sunny, makes me warm.

I saw this bluebird today, he's so fluffed up, he looks round. (Feel free to draw or paint him if you want to)

Thanks Virginia, yes it's quite freezing up here, today it's 8 degrees. I can see the ice on the river. Next week should be a bit better.
Christel, thanks for your comment.
