Cups and Saucers

20x12.5 watercolor and gouache over a failed still life that was a floral in a red vase, a white pitcher, and onions on a white cloth and a blue and red table drape. I did not like the floral so turned it vertically and drew cups and saucers. Later I went back and added line to include Oriental fans, a pagoda, pink roses, etc. I reworked the bottom area by adding white gouache on the cup and saucer, strengthening the reds and blues, then correcting compositional areas. My original still life that was drawn and painted from life has now been redone 3 times. I'm still unsure if it is finished
C&C welcome

Beautiful colours! Could maybe use some contrast, dark lines/shadows?
Very nicely done rework! I like the fan in the background.

Re: Cups and Saucers

I am liking it so far! You have done a good job integrating the old and new. I like the idea of reusing too.
How did you reclaim enough white for the cup and saucers? I know magic erasers can work to pull off old colour.... You have done well with that. That’s tricky using an old painting.
Have you ever seen Elena Katsyura(Russian painter), her teacup series? I love her work. All subjects. Her work is yummy-scrumptious! You might like her stuff....
Her small pieces are affordable. One day I am buying one. They sell quickly.

Thanks Christine, no, not heard of her work but will check it out. The white was in the original still life horizontal piece so did not have to reclaim it thank goodness.

Thank you Carol. It was a fun save.

Re: Cups and Saucers

Well gee Kay, I liked the original too!😉
You did a good job camouflaging the original.
Your new painting has a Japanese influence that I really like.

This is quite teh transformation. I prefer the new version. Such good use of an old painting.

Re: Cups and Saucers

Thank you Dave! I've done lots of these re-do ones and sold most. People can't figure out how the final version has all the little nuances.
