Use to denote nudity/mature subject matter After a long break from figure drawing....

I think the last I attended a life drawing session was in January this year. It's been a hectic one - in the work department. Lately, however, I'm really thankful to be re-inspired by the life drawings of someone who, I feel, is amazing with figures/the anatomy. Because of his works, I started drawing (figure) again, well, the drawings i did are not much to see - esp after such a long break, but I'm glad to have practised. I wanted to try painting instead of drawing, to change things a little as well as to find the excuse to paint, so here it is. Online reference.

Before the year ends, I really should try to attend at least one more life session...

I like this style! I am glad you are re-connecting with the figure sessions.

Ive looked at your facebook page and you are a very talented lady. In the new spirit of constructive criticism, I love it, apart from missing highlights on the thigh maybe

Re: After a long break from figure drawing....

Thanks Bethany I've painted this based on an online ref but yes, I will definitely try to attend a life session - hopefully I will not miss the last one for the year.

Thanks Bill, for the encouraging words. It's hard to stay motivated sometimes...referring to online images/poses can become quite...well, I'm not sure how to describe it...

Hey David, thanks so much for the encouragement I really appreciate feedbacks and suggestions to improve further. I see...maybe I should add a streak of highlight (of the same thigh colour but brighter/more intense) on the thigh area.

Necessary! If you have no other options. What you do depends on how badly you want to know the human form visually.

Thanks so much Carol!

Bill, it's definitely necessary! It's just that getting used to online poses may make me expect improvement when drawing from life...

Lovely painting Constance, good modelling particularly in the face. A suggestion might be to add some cooler, more neutral colours. I hope you can make it to a life drawing before the end of the year if you've not managed one so far.

Re: After a long break from figure drawing....

Thanks so much Nathan and yes, I agree with you that I need to add some cooler colours to tone down the warm colours. Unfortunately, I didn't get to go for the last session as I was unwell that day

Re: After a long break from figure drawing....

i like the unfinished look of this painting, Constance. Have you put highlights on the thigh? As it is, it supports the figure, but my eye is drawn to the face. Adding highlights to the thigh might reduce the impact of the upper body and face. I also like the bits of hot color. It adds vibrancy.

If you read and follow my post to you back in June 2016 you should have no difficulty in handling the life group the only enemy you would have would be time.

http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/show....php?t=1406965

Things photos cant teach you, things you can only learn face to face dealing with real life which you can apply when working from flat references.

Linear perspective
Depth
Editing
Measuring by eye alone

Also know about these two concepts below understanding how light can fail the illusion making process and seeing planes in forms can help with form and light.

The treachery of light
Planes

In Art School in my day we would do still life painting and drawings which taught you the first four issues above so set up still lives and work from them understanding how to place an object in space, the figure is an object in space just a little more complicated. I used to draw my children's dolls and soft toys surely you can find such objects to learn the big four. When you go to life group you will find improvement because practising from images you have learnt a lot about the figure and practicing from still life you have learnt to place objects in the illusionary space of paper and canvas.
