land of almost darkness

Feels like I am living in a land of almost darkness. November and now December has dark clouds, or heavy cloud, or just overcast. Sometimes it decides to snow for a moment, then hail until finally the weather thinks..... it is time to be almost dark again for most of the day.

Caroline, it is the seasonal flip side of the Midnight Sun especially during trying weather. You caught the mood if that is consolation. Gary

The days are so short and I find it hard to paint after dark. There is a real sense of the time of year in your work

Re: land of almost darkness

Hi Gary many thanks. Strange but I used to love cold and stormy days when I was young now I yearn for sunny days and beach walks with warmth! The funny thing is that we in the UK have started naming storms and the storm we are having at the moment is actually called 'Caroline', that is amusing!

Hi Ernst, many thanks and we have another storm here today, wonder if you too have the storms.

Hi Irena, I too find it hard to paint after dark, the painting always looks not quite right the following day in natural daylight! You too should be experiencing storm 'Caroline' in the UK.

Re: land of almost darkness

There is a beautiful mood to this one, Caroline, even though the sky is mostly dark. The small amounts of light getting through seem like a real gift; something precious and fleeting. I find these cold, gray winter skies so oppressive but when the sun comes out and snowy fields glow ... it's almost all worthwhile.

Caroline - A lovely atmospheric effect once again. The dark sky is nicely complemented by the section of 'glowing, warm light' on the horizon - Nicely Painted !

Re: land of almost darkness

A beautiful painting despite the darkness that inspired it.

In the winter I find that if I double the number of lights on in the studio the darkness doesn't seem to bother me as much. I see winter as a time to concentrate on daily studio work rather than plein air fun. Also a time to try new materials and techniques.

We live in mostly darkness at this time of year too, although we aren't getting your stormy weather. I find the dark colors in your painting not to be gloomy but rich and beautiful. The light on the horizon is harmonious and hopeful. Beautifully executed as always.

Re: land of almost darkness

Hi Donna, it is a trying time of the year for sure. Though things brightened up here recently in the last few days with the arrival of snow! Many thanks for your nice comment.

Hello Michael, many thanks for your comment, you will be going through your hot summer days just now, so different to what it is like here!

Very positive outlook Mr C and thank you, fortunately some snow has arrived and the light seems much better. Do you use the daylight bulbs?

Hello Francis I didn't realise you would have dark days too always imagined you in a land of sunshine and snow!

Many thanks Joachim hope the sun is shining with you today!

Hi John actually as I type the sky outside is just like my painting, though twilight is already on her way at 3.30 pm! Many thanks.

Re: land of almost darkness

Wow this is absolutely astonishing! I love the colors and the atmosphere, and I really like how the abstract feel of it; there is nothing solid and realistic that I am looking at, yet I understand what it's depicting. Excellent work!
