Flowology

Hey gang,

It's been a good week in the studio! This piece has been alternating between the easel and leaning against a wall for almost a year. I finally put some finishing touches to it this week!

Flowology, 48"h x 36"w x 2"d Mixed media (fluid acrylic paint, cotton, pouring medium, glass beads, acrylic gel) on cradled birch panel. I wish I could get a photo that shows off the fine glass beads that just look like dull passages and blobs in this photo.

Here is a detail shot with some indication of the underlying media.

Re: Flowology

mmnmm, such a delicious size to work with, it must look great on the wall.

liking the texture and agree it's unfortunate to be missing out on the beads - have you tried an angle shot to capture their depth? or angled lighting to capture their glisten or shadows?

What a fantastic statement this one makes, Rick! A big WOW from me. At that size it is bound to captivate and mesmerize viewers.

This looks like the natural progression of your earlier white series - I like it a lot

Re: Flowology

Thanks La. I have done three photo sessions with this model so far, the best one WITHOUT my memory card in my camera, aaarrrgggh. Tough to light these big white paintings with reflective surfaces! They end up with dark and light sides, cool tops and warm bottoms, and loss of detail on the near side when I use side lighting to get shadows that highlight the texture. Sooner or later I get the right diffuse lighting outside on an overcast day, but not this week. I had a professional printmaking company do one of them for a book two years ago, and got soaked for $120 for a crappy digital picture that made the piece look like a painting of a white rabbit licking icicles in a blizzard. LOL (sorry for the rant...)

Thanks Kay, Greggo and Elroy for the happy-making thoughts.

Thanks Lyn, yes indeed, it began as an introduction of visual textures into the flowy portions of the Ology series. This one feels a bit like an ending; with some promise regarding what might be next. We'll see...

Re: Flowology

Very nice work.
I'm wishing also to see the effects of the beads.
One of those pieces that just doesn't show well, but being familiar with your previous work I know it's a knock out. Great size too.
Paint that rant,,,,I like white rabbits!

Re: Flowology

LOL - I'll spray paint a canvas white.

Thanks Babs! The glass beads are like little micro marbles, the kind of glass bead that is manufactured to make highway lines reflective at night. They are shown in the detail shot, the passage right next to the roughest texture.

Re: Flowology

Hey Rick -

I think I can visualize, to a degree, what the beading looks like, and the whole thing must be stunning.

It also would make a wonderful fabric design, IMHO.

Regards,
Trier

This is one of those paintings that only viewing irl will do it justice.

It looks like it flows beautifully.
