Arrow December 2017 Plant Parade

Holiday Colours - Plant Parade for December 2017

Happy Holidays everyone!

My name is Pam Dallaire and I'll be your host for this Plant Parade.

The topic is “Holiday Colours” and their associations. All the reference photos shown are photos from the Wetcanvas Reference Image Library but you can use any image, your own or from another person with permission. The time of year the photo was taken is not important, just the colours and the association of those colours with your own memories of the holiday season.

For example, you will see some colour associations from my own memories of Christmas and New Year’s. (These won’t be the same for you.)
  • Brown - the colour of dried Pine Cones, the colour of my Great-Grandmother’s dining room table (which I still use), the colour of Cattails sticking out of the snow on Christmas Day, the colour of a Christmas Turkey fresh out of the oven.

Red and Green - the colours of Poinsettias on the table and wreaths in the window, the colour of my plaid Christmas Tree skirt, the red colour of Santa’s suit, the green colour of the Christmas tree, and I could go on.

Gold - the colour of tree decorations and jewelry worn during the holiday season, of fireworks on New Year’s Eve.

White - the non-colour of fresh snow and frost on the window panes, the white lights on the tree, the colour of milk left out for Santa on Christmas Eve (to go with those freshly baked Golden Brown cookies).

Silver - the colour I associate with New Year’s Eve (bright lights, old disco balls at dances, flashy dresses, and Silver jewellry.

What Mediums are allowed?:
I know a lot of the people who post are painters but any medium is allowed as long as it represents the Floral and Botanical theme.

Reveal Dates:
You can start discussions at any time but remember DO NOT POST your Plant Parade entry until the REVEAL dates, which are from Dec 20th until Dec 31st, New Year's Eve!

Discussions:
Feel free to show your live reference, or photographic reference, during the month of December, and discuss what colours you associate with your own celebrations. Since this is about Holiday Colours, it can also include New Year's Eve Celebration colours.

Most of all have fun! I’m looking forward to seeing your entries from the day after Boxing Day until New Year’s Eve, no matter where you live. I’ll be watching your posts all month and so let’s get creating.

Amarylis

Apples

Poinsettia

Oranges

Orange (and chocolate which comes is derived from a bean)

Pam, I really like your idea for the Christmas season, good references too. I happen to have an amaryllis plant that is just blooming, may try that but will see what I choose. Thanks for hosting.

Re: December 2017 Plant Parade

Hi Margaretta, yes it is the season to be jolly.
ArtsyMom, an Amarylis of your own would be great, but it can be anything that brings back holiday memories.

Re: December 2017 Plant Parade

What a nice idea Pam!
That lovely amaryllis reminds me of one I once grew!

Are you happy with 27th? .. we can bring to before Christmas if you wish - but 27th gives us longer!

How about we say post your finished works before Xmas until New Years? Everyone OK with that? I know people are travelling over the holidays.

Re: December 2017 Plant Parade

Pamela thanks, - posting before Christmas is great for me, as Im having our whole family descending on us for the Christmas holiday break.

In New Zealand its our long Summer Holiday time (all the schools close before Xmas and dont open again until February) our family will be with us for weeks. I will have a house-full and it will be extremely difficult to get anywhere near my computer to post anything! But Im so looking forward to having the whole family together!

Re: December 2017 Plant Parade

I'm just happy that some of you are interested in participating. Post your images whenever you can and we can add them to a complete file at the end of the month. Don't worry about the date, just create and add.

I received Adobe Video applications for Christmas a month early because they were on sale so I'll be trying my hand at making a VIDEO instead of a still image. It should be fun and a great way to learn how to use the programs before xmas. Maybe I'll do a step-by-step (paint along) video. I just haven't decided on the subject yet.

Re: December 2017 Plant Parade

Pamela - thats sounds really interesting! Im looking forward to how you like the programme and how easy or difficult it is to use? That would be great if you could do a video of your painting!

Re: December 2017 Plant Parade

Thanks for an interesting challenge, Pam. I've loved the color red from small already- red candles on the tree, red apples, red cherries...
