My grandfather – I would love some input – X-post portraiture

Hello everyone. I don't often do portraits (I think this is my 4th ever) but this is a special one and I would love to have people's honest opinion. My grandfather passed on Tuesday and I wanted to do something to honour him. A few of my cousins are going to say things that they composed about him but I am not good with words and thought about doing his portrait instead.

Thing is, I want to do him justice and I will not bring it to the service on Saturday if it doesn't work out well. So please let me know what you think about what I have done so far. I will be working on it pretty much all of today and tomorrow. It's pretty emotional and I want to do it right.

Here is the picture I'm working from (my uncle took it a month ago for my grandfather's 90th birthday).

And here is where I'm at with my WIP done in Watercolour pencils on Canson Watercolour Board 9x12.

Thank you!

My condolences for the loss of your loved grandfather, Virginie. A great way to remember him too.
A great start to your painting. i like that the background is being kept simple. The vest will bring in the needed values.

Thank you very much Christel and Viv.

A question, would you keep the background white or still add some colours? I understand you would leave it unpainted Christel?

Here is where I am at this morning.

It's coming along beautifully Virginie!
To put color on the background or just leave it white? I always put the background in first because if you ruin the background you can always start again when you havent put heaps of time and effort into the main part of the portrait. So in this case, I wouldnt risk adding a background now. I think its up to you - but as you are making such a wonderful job of this portrait, I wouldnt add a background now.

Thank you Viv! It's a good point doing the background first I'll try to do that in the future. Here is the portrait now, I think I might be finished with it. I'm still debating a background or not gonna try stuff on a separate paper to see.

Thank you Christel.

I did do a background yesterday after all, so here is the final version. 9X12 Canson WC Artboard painted with Derwent and CD Supracolor Watercolour pencils and Inktense blocks and backgroud done in Watercolour.

Great portrait. Background worked well, though I might have made it a bit darker to contrast more with the skin as the strongest contrast is his vest. Just mostly close to the face, not necessarily dark throughout.

Also my condolences on your loss. That portrait is just wonderful!

I would try to soften the hard edges of the background where they meet the figure, perhaps with a very soft brush and very little water... but that might spoil the whole painting, so be very careful! Or leave it as it is, it's fine!
