Digital from Life

This may be one of those ill fated journeys (journals). I have sketched on/off most of my life but never seem to have the right gear with me at the right time to do enough sketching in real life outside the home. I have plein air painted. This digital journal (Ipad mini & Artrage software) is a try for this purpose.

My sketches are starting pretty crude and may remain that way. Both the Ipad and the Artrage are new to me, as is all digital drawing/painting. Learning to use the tools is part of the process.

Anyone else have a digital journal?

Thanks for any C&C. Gary

Re: Digital from Life

Nice work on both Gary. I was doing Digital artwork for about 15 years before I went back to Watercolors and Gouache. I still play around with Photoshop, Painter and recently ArtRage.
Regards,
Greg.

Re: Digital from Life

Thanks Greg. I have enjoyed seeing your gouache. I will have to check out the watercolors. I will continue to paint in acrylics and casein but digital is a nice change. Gary

Re: Digital from Life

Digital always amazes me. The only digital I deal with is Photoshop, layers and different effects which I use for reference but actually doing a digital painting.... maybe someday. I really like what you've done.... very much a sketch which is what it's all about in a journal isn't it.

Re: Digital from Life

Thanks Helen.

My electronic reader died and I decided to put its replacement - an Ipad Mini - to multiple uses.

B'anna had posted some digital work on the Landscape forum that she then used as a basis for a oil painting. I liked the idea that it was not either/or traditional medium vs. digital.

I do sketches just for the fun and digital makes the clean-up easy. More sketching can never hurt. With the stylus and the tablet, the step to digital is pretty intuitive.

Thanks again. Gary

Re: Digital from Life

Which stylus are you using? Do you like it?
Have you checked out procreate app?

Thanks

Re: Digital from Life

Doug, My sister-in-law bought a bag of Brand X styluses at a Dollar Store. She gave me a handful. I can not use the sophisticated Apple Pencil on my Ipad Mini as it is designed to work with the higher-end, more expensive and much heavier Ipad's.

I am new to this and have only used Artrage and the free version of an APP called "Sketches". I have a long ways to go with Artrage before I try something else.

I have almost no expertise compared some folks on the Digital Forum. I am trying to make these ~30-45 minute sketches. Are you doing digital?

Gary

Re: Digital from Life

I have been playing with digital on and off for about a year. Only did one piece that could be call finished, but lots of sketches mostly for Scavenger Hunts in the Art from Life Forum. Tried a few apps and have settled on Procreate but a couple of others who join in the Hunts use ArtRage and love it.

Main reason i am commenting is to say I love your sketches. The metal in the coffee shop really caught my eye, Well Done! Your sketches in no way look like someone just starting out in digital.

Keep sketching
Joe

Re: Digital from Life

Thanks Joe for your kind comments. I will have to try procreate one of these days. I have not try to "finish" anything. I just like the mental drill of trying to make a fairly quick image. Gary

Re: Digital from Life

Thanks Joan. I just used the inspiration of your many sketches of people in public places to try one of my own. Gary

Wow! Gary, these are great. I have ArtRage on my Kindle, been fooling with it a bit but nowhere near the control you have with it. You've got a wonderful sketch style and it comes through beautifully. I have trouble using my finger and a stylus didn't seem to work well on the Kindle, but then it hasn't got that sensitive a touch screen.
