F-86 Sabre WIP

Hello everyone. Here's my first attempt at art in over 4 years. Prismacolors on Fabriano Accademia 200gsm paper. The original composition is by Antonis Karidis, a digital aviation artist. Reproduced with permission.

I need some tips for the clouds. The sky looks rather flat.

Beautiful. You get a real sense of freedom. I was thinking how beautiful the sky looks, just like it is when you are up there, and then I read that you think it looks flat. I think it looks perfect and not flat at all. How did you get that very smooth section on the upper right. Did you blend it with thinners?

Re: F-86 Sabre WIP

Thank you Vena. Glad to know that you like the sky. I haven't used a blender or solvent to get that blue sky. What I did was to scrape some pigment off the pencils and then used a cotton ball to rub it onto the paper. It takes a lot of work but you get a smooth gradient. I might go over that area with nail polish remover later on.

Very nice. Great sky and clouds. Glad you picked a Korea F-86, love the yellow bands!

You skills don't appear to have rusted much. The plane is great, but I really admire those cloulds. That softness is tough to pull off well with CP.

Wow! Thanks a lot everyone. I'm pleasantly surprised to know that you all like the clouds. I cut out random cloud like shapes on a stiff piece of paper n then rub color over it using a cotton ball. That's my trick for clouds. I think I'll make the shadows on the clouds just a tad darker and use an eraser to pick of some highlights.

I really like this - the lightness and brightness really work to portray the subject in the right way.

I looked up the original digital version online because I was interested to see the differences achieved with a hands-on medium. Your human-touch version is really successful!

Re: F-86 Sabre WIP

Thank you skappy, Olaf, KaySilver.

Here's what it looks like now. I've darkened the shadows and added details to the wings and tailplane. Did some work on the clouds too. I'm tempted to call this finished so I'll set this aside for a few days and take a look at it again. Something might look incomplete. I'm not sure if I should add panel lines to the fuselage and wings. Any thoughts on that?

I don't understand. What do you do with the "Cloud-like shapes" after you have rubbed them with color?

Re: F-86 Sabre WIP

I got rid of the jet exhaust based on feedback I got over on the Aviation Art forum. The photo has a yellow tinge from the sunlight. I'm wondering if I should go over the sky with the Prisma colorless blender, or nail polish remover, just to make it smoother. Has anyone here tried NPR? Are the results satisfactory?

I think I'll leave the a/c as it is and not burnish it.

@Attalus - My explanation of the technique was terrible. I will post some photos of the technique.

PS: Do other artists here take photos of their work or do you folks scan it? I scanned this one and it came out horribly over exposed.

Re: F-86 Sabre WIP

Here are the photos that explain how I do the clouds.

1. My random cloud cutouts

2. Shave off some pigment and rub a cotton wool ball into it.

3. Now take the cutout and use it as a 'stencil' by rubbing the pigment on.

4. This gives you a basic cloud shape.

Ideally you need a base coat of a light color. You can then use an eraser at the end to pick off highlights.
