Gathering At The River

REF PHOTO BY JIM OATLEY used with his permission
Paper Fabriano Artistico
Pencils mainly Polychromus & a few Pablos, Derwent procolour & Luminace
Zestit & the Titanium White Powder (not mixed just straight onto the paper) from Brush & Pencil
This took me many, many hours and the challenge of doing the reflections was very stressful as I've never done a background that's so envolved before.
Still I'm pleased I pushed myself and hope this image shows up without colour hazes like some of my work has before.
Always open for suggestions to improve even when the paper is worked to its fullest. I can learn for next time.
Thanks for looking

Re: Gathering At The River

Thanks Shirley , sorry that its showing too much of a green tone on my galaxy tablet anyway. On my Dell laptop it was spot on colour values, so frustrating !
I hope it shows more true on others devices or monitors. I just recalibrated my laptop wish we could do the same for tablets

Re: Gathering At The River

All the hours you put in have really paid off Brissie - it's fantastic! It has that snapshot feeling of a captured moment, like a photo. And the reflections are spot-on.

It's inspiring for me as I'm just starting out drawing birds. It's great to see what can be achieved.

Thanks snapspinner and Claudia and I hope your monitor sees it as i posted and not the extra green tones my samsung tablet is showing. Its not that I dont like it but rather I dont like to mislead.

I love it! Beautifully done. How much of the background is the powder blender? Is it worth the expense, or does Zest-It do the same job"

Re: Gathering At The River

The color looks great to me. I'm particularly looking at the tree bark and the tone seems perfecto.

This painting is beautiful. It really draws me in. Your techniques are awesome. When I look at the back and foreground I can see the complexity. Yet they're so subdued... what a challenge. I don't have the foggiest idea how you did it!?!

Re: Gathering At The River

Thanks Vena, I dint use the powder blender only the "Coloured Pencil Titanium White powder" and I took my smooshing brush and applied it on as a powder in areas at the top where I wanted a more cloudy look.
I used the same Titanium White Powder mixed with the "Coloured Pencil Touch-Up Texture liquid" to get the whiter tips on the feathers and a bit in the water then went over it with a cream pencil so it wastnt so startling and harsh.
I used Zestit everywhere else when I needed it. You can't use the "Powder Blender" powder on traditional paper you need a pastel sanded paper like Uart or Fisher 400 and it needs to be sprayed with her setting spray ( which I think might be the same as SpectrFix) it being a non toxic spray too.
So unless you want to work on sanded paper the only products I would buy is powdered white pencil.
I'm going to try and see if I can get white powdered pencil and do a bit of experimenting cause this product is mighty expensive the shipping coast for dangeous materials. We can buy it in Australia now but not in Queensland!
Hope thats answered you questions if not just PM me OK

Re: Gathering At The River

I see now there is a difference between the powder blender and the powdered white pencil. Thanks for the explanation. I have avoided ordering anything because of the cost and because I don't do enough drawing to warrant it. I do love your background and water.

Re: Gathering At The River

Hi Vena , yes the powder blender speads/blends the pencil into the tooth of the sanded paper, then you need to set it with the fixative spray so you can apply more pencil otherwise it lifts the layers that have already been layed down. Unlike pastels that grip the sanded paper.
Its not as messy as pastels but still creates a fair amount of dust which effects my sinuses so i need a mask!
The titanium white mixed with the "touch up texture" is great for making whiskers and the like and once dry can be coloured over. Makes life easier in that way as you dont have to worry about leaving the paper white. Mind you I still prefere the look of the paper with the enhancement of this new product. But the old guache way is still good too.
Thanks for loving my background and water thats great to hear for as you know Im a beginner in that area of art.😊😊💗💗
