So, whatcha all doing for Christmas this year?

I've got kids with mates and tons of extended family so there's always the juggling of dates over the holidays. We share nicely and I'm just happy to have them whenever I can and the specific date of the 25th is fairly irrelevant. This year i get the 27th - new years.

We eat, drink, visit, build gingerbread houses and decorate gingerbread families for said houses. We do an xmas puzzle santas workshop that we've been doing since they were small.

Of traditions, we deviate from the norm because of external family extensions (who do the traditional turkey/ham thing). Instead we do fondue with beef/pork/chicken/shrimp/scallops, french bread and tons of veggies. Dinner tends to last a couple hours while Boney M and Jazz swing xmas albums play.

I gave away my fake trees years ago because the whole 'piles of gifts' thing became more a bother than a joy - we're all feeling the burden of commercialism and have become minimalists, so simple stocking hung all in a row are filled by various santas and we gather in the morning, drink coffee, eat xmas oranges, muffins or eggs and giggle over silly and practical surprises.

Last year I cut a baby spruce from a crowded grouping and we had a one foot tree in a pot on the table - he smelled marvellous.
This year I'm decorating pineapples 'cause we all fruit.

At some point during the visit, outside if it's not too miserably cold, we do photo shoots.

So, what's your Christmas thang?

I feel like a bit of a party pooper, but I absolutely detest Christmas, and try my best every year to see as little as possible of it. Even then, some level of participation in the rampant consumer fest it is still unavoidable.

Re: So, whatcha all doing for Christmas this year?

I have my daughters two friends coming over for Christmas day lunch, they both live in Mexico and are also here to visit our wonderful beaches in the New Year..this means that it will be super festive and fun! I will be cooking as it is just easier that way, while everyone drinks/smokes and gets merry on my balcony. After lunch though they will be washing up as I will be exhausted lol

In the afternoon we will probably play scrabble or Cluedo....all good fun!

Then, in the evening I will be forced to watch 'Love actually' again, as apparently, Christmas is not Christmas without watching this film....

I'm with Brian and this year will be no different, just want to get through it. Have a hubby in hospital right now and can't be worried about holidays.

Re: So, whatcha all doing for Christmas this year?

Christmas at our house will be special this year because our daughter-in-law has 6 days off from her job @ Amazon in Seattle and will be coming up to visit over the holidays.

We have a few traditions, the main one being that I put on a dinner & spectacle of some kind each year on Christmas Eve as a 'surprise' for my wife. I have been doing this since the kids were really small, and each year I pick a different 'theme' and for the past 20 years this has meant a different country somewhere around the world. Cooking meals out of my comfort zone is always an interesting challenge. Last year the Christmas eve theme was Tanzania.

This year I have decided on Scandinavia as the theme. Dinner will be a Swedish julbord buffet and Danish desserts. There will be vikings, or at least a partial viking ship I am figuring out for the living room.

Christmas Day is back to the 'normal' North American Christmas, with a turkey dinner.

In the past we have always had my family in for Christmas dinner, but my mum is no longer up to the long drive, so I will get up to see her in the days after Christmas so that we can have another get-together with family on the Island.

Thanks Derek, Colin and Katy. He is being moved from the specialty unit today to a rehab. Hopefully he will be able to come home in a couple of weeks.

I spent last Christmas and New Year's Ever and almost the whole of the winter in hospitals corridors too and I can relate. I wish to your husband a speedy recovery and to be home at Christmas. It is very lonely being in hospitals during festive nights ( and days) .. but the nights are worst.

As for these Christmas.. I don't know.I'll be more than happy if I'm able to pass them with no "incidents" even if I have to stay home alone. My social life is in ruins either way because in order to have some sort of social life you have to be free of other obligations.
