Re: November 2017 Watercolour Challenge - Grapes and Coffee Pot

The elevators were off today so I couldn't go to the seniors centre to paint so I just painted at home I wasn't about to walk down ten floors then walk back up ten floors with painting gear . As soon as I get the camera out I will take a picture of what I did with it .

Super table and background Sandie, maybe you could drop some colour into the grapes and add shadows to the coffee pot?

Lately, I've been attempting pen and wash using "continuous line drawing" with the pen. This month's challenge was a good topic for this.

Here's my painting - Arches sketch book 6x10.

Re: November 2017 Watercolour Challenge - Grapes and Coffee Pot

I made two different versions of this still life as sketches in my sketchbooks.
The first one is in black and white, made with my own made graphite watercolour in my own made hardbound A5 sketchbook filled with W&N Cartridge medium paper at 220 gsm. The paper buckled a little, ( or I overdid it a bit with my washes) so didn't turn out that good at the scan. Anyway.. what ever seems to you to be a bit crooked is actually a bit buckled..

The second version is in colour. Made on my Strathmore 400 series A4 Watercolour sketchbook filled with 300 gsm same series paper that is a CP.
It was made with Van Gogh watercolours.

Thank you for looking.

Jan I must say I like the pen version very casual and a lovely simple rendition wonderful

Maria I also like the rich colours in your painting it looks like oils only you say it is watercolours .

Sandy isn't it wonderful how a cool colour changes the feel of a painting , very nice .

I like the graphite version. It looks by far better from close. I just lighten a bit the underside of the pot that it was a bit too dark and I'm thinking now if it would be better to try to remake this still life with graphite watercolour but on the other sketchbook that has a bit stronger paper.

I have the notion that the home made gum arabic I used to make the watercolour graphite made my paper buckle more than usual. I know well this particular cartridge paper and doesn't buckle that much even with quite heavy washes, when I use it of course with regular watercolours. So I must have done something differently.

Thank you Les for your kind words. I like very much the apple that you added on your version. I thought to add something too, but then I stuck with the watercolour graphite that I had made it but I had not time to test it. So I made whatever was in the reference photo and didn't bother that much with the creative part of the sketches.
