The Straggler

Last evening I was watching a most unusual sunset, as the sun dipped behind the distant hills, out my studio's West window - Much to my surprise a Gold Finch landed on the spent sunflowers that I had planted outside this window, and began feasting on what seeds remained in the heads -

Fortunately, he remained long enough for me to do a very quick and rough pencil sketch - I spent last night working up the painting before the image escaped me - Finished it up today -

I was taken back to see this bird , for they are normally the first to leave - I guess he was a straggler -

Hope you enjoy this very beautiful bird - As always, all comments and suggestions are welcome-

Painting: Oil 12 x 16 on canvas panel; Palette: Cadmium Yellow Light, Rose Madder Genuine, Vermilion, Burnt Sienna, French Ultramarine Blue, Prussian Blue, Cremnitz White -

Thanks for viewing

Re: The Straggler

You have such a great style and have rendered this straggler so well. He is eating his last sunflower seed before heading out for warmer climes.

I love the warm tones throughout this painting. I really like the curvy sunflower stems. Good placement of the gold finch. I really like your style.

I love the way the Gold Finch is almost camouflaged in those terrific Autumn colours. I really enjoy your energetic style Gordon.

Re: The Straggler

Kay: Pleased you like the painting - I think this "Straggler" realized that he had stayed a bit to long and was in a frenzy to fuel up; Needed to continue his journey South to your country -

Thank you for viewing

Re: The Straggler

Christel: Thank you - Yes, this is an American Gold Finch - I do not think there is a "Yellow" in a tube that can duplicate the bird's color - It is the most vibrant of yellows; particularly, when the sun strikes it - It just has to be seen to believe how powerfully its color explodes into one's view -

I just love it when they arrive here in the Spring by the thousands - A cloud of yellow - Most awesome and inspiring -

Again, thanks for viewing

Re: The Straggler

Kay M: Thank you for your comments - Pleased you like - The sunset that evening created quite an array of color throughout the landscape; the grasses had that warm golden look; an ideal setting for the Finch -

I do not find many straight lines in nature; She tends to be most dynamic and curvilinear - Always, taking you on an interesting trip -

Re: The Straggler

Chammi: Thank you - The colors this time of the year are very warm and glowing; particularly when you have a vibrant sunset like it was that evening -
It was most unusual in that the sky had a "greenish" glow to it; not unlike the green I sometimes see when the Northern Light show occurs - It was most interesting -

I am not pleased with the clouds in the painting; will have to work on them -Was getting tired and had to quit -

I guess my painting does appear somewhat energetic ; I have a tendency, when a scene appears that I want to paint, to attack the canvas until I get it down -I see so many colors and I want to record them before they escape -Tends to sap my energy- I guess that is why I have to go back and make corrections - Maybe, I should be more calm and methodical about the process -

As always, thanks for viewing and your comments

Re: The Straggler

You are right. There is no yellow that matches the beauty of the male Gold finch yellow. Your being in a hurry seems to be what has fueled your unique and interesting style.

Dottie: As always thank you for viewing and your comments -

No matter how often I see this bird, I am always in awe of its beauty - No words nor rendering in paint can possibly capture the color - The bird just has to be seen to understand -

"Interesting"; I guess that is as good of a term as any to label my style - Maybe as time progresses I can improve -

Again, thanks

Re: The Straggler

Certainly is a very pleasant image.. Quite impressionistic ....
