knifed x's 5

three 6x12's, an 8x10 and a 6x6, all oils on stretched
[from a group of 14 total so far]

The back story for those who like stories: A friend of mines 90 year old mother recently retired from painting and I ended up with piles/boxes/stacks of her art stuff. Needless to say there are some treasures and some horrors and my living room is a shamble.

These pieces are from a chapter of horrors where I had to use pliers to get the lid off a tube of naples yellow and tore the whole lid/thread combination off the tube. This led to me having to use it or lose it so i collected a bunch of rejected or unfinished canvas from piles of work in the basement and set to work with knife painting semi-minimalist works in hopes of rescuing previous epic failures.

The torn tube of naples turned out to be quite greenish, likely due to age, and quite pasty, also an age thing, so i have no idea what to expect for drying time and/or crackle. The second tube of naples, also thick, was more normal color. The white used, also pasty, thicker than toothpaste and riddled with bits of chunk that i had to remove as i went, added horror to the experiments.

My hope is for them all to dry/cure by novembers month of sundays display dates ... given the pasty thicknesses i could be completely deluded.

So yeah, if you could council the compositions, and perhaps my sanity, that'd be great ...

Thanks,

la

I'd say you made a lot of art out of a mess - good for you. I like these!

Seems to me that the second one should be turned sideways. I like them all.

Re: knifed x's 5

I can see a person with a blue face leaning against a wall in the second one
I love the last one and I think the first one just needs a little more work albeit in a minimal way

Agree with above comments. The first one is too minimal.

Re: knifed x's 5

thanks laf, that's what i saw too with the blue one

they're all still very wet, i carved a couple horizontal lines in the first one for added interest/content and put a swipe of pale orange down the lower door, thanks

Re: knifed x's 5

These are nice. Really like the blue, in its current vertical configuration. Would love a tiny splash of something, somewhere on the left, just for movement of the eye. Also think the red has more possibilities.
Looks like a fun project

Re: knifed x's 5

thanks, Bi and mary

i'm going to let them all completely dry so that i have good control over layering on any color additions. a few of the others [not posted in this group] are relying entirely on full monochromatic texture and i expect they'll not stand up to scrutiny ...
