How to add info to the BACK of a panel or canvas?

These days I sign and date (year only) the front of my oil and watercolor paintings. (I know there's disagreement about whether to do so, but that's an issue for other threads.) I'm wondering about the medium for adding slightly more detailed info (artist, title, medium, year, perhaps brief thoughts on the artwork) to the back.

In the one show I've done, and in the 2-3 shows I'm doing over the next year, the gallery asked to add a label to the back of my paintings. For oils on panels, I guess I can print out the info on an Avery label and stick it on. (The panels are mostly dark, so hard to handwrite.) But for the upcoming shows I've also got framed watercolors (with brown paper covering the back) and stretched canvas. I'm not sure how to add labels/handwriting to these. Even if I weren't doing shows, I'd be interested in best practices for adding artist/title/medium/year (and blurb?) to the back.

So my question is: in what medium do you add info to the back? What info, exactly?

Avery mailing labels are a perfect way to add painting title, artist's information and price to the back of framed watercolor paintings. I've been using these for years.

When I reframe and reuse existing frames, I just add a new label over the previously existing label.

sling paint,
Virgil

I have developed a signature logo that I paint on that back of my pieces. It can include the title and date as well. I actually spend a bit of time with it but it shows a sense of care for each piece of artwork.

That sounds really interesting, would you mind posting a picture of it? I'm curious to see what something like that would look like.

Virgil: thanks for the tip. I'll try that for my watercolors.

I'd also be curious to see an example of the painted logo on the back of a piece. Where on the back do you paint it? In what medium?

I typically paint on board. This is an example of my MdP signature painted on the back of the panel.

Over the last few years, I've started using a Sharpie and writing the title and my full name on the back (on the canvas which is over the back of the stretchers only) since my signature is just initials. For posterity's sake if nothing else.

Good idea to put it over the stretchers.

Yes, Sharpie permanent ink tends to migrate through anything it's on. I once had a wall where someone had used a Sharpie to mark a place for an outlet. I used paint, Kilz, you name it... that damn stuff kept coming up through with a pink cast no matter what. It's unstoppable, I tell ya!

I've used the sharpie on the stretcher as described by the immortal Itsallart.

You can add an awesome amount of detail on those stretchers.
