Long Hiatus -- Wanting to Return

I painted for many years, then, the last year I seemed to peter out. I don't know why, but it could have been health reasons. My health has not been as good as it used to be. I tire easily. Pain issues. I began writing instead so I could sit.

I would like to incorporate painting back into my life but not sure where to start. I used to sketch plein air but I'm unmotivated by this. I think about making abstract paintings. Do people plan or sketch abstracts beforehand? I have some in mind but not sure if I should dive right in -- paint onto canvas.

Re: Long Hiatus -- Wanting to Return

what's your normal medium?
should you be trying a new medium?
are you a detail person or a messy chaos person?
have you tried a monochromatic piece? maybe some kind of a home grown still life set up would get you started, warmed up to painting again.
abstract is Vast and Everyone does it a little bit differently, but i'd recommend a gentle compositional guide before you start aimlessly winging paint around a canvas [tho you Could get lucky doing it that way.]

welcome to WC! i look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Re: Long Hiatus -- Wanting to Return

Hello La. Thank you for the welcome. Is that "la" like in singing a note? Or L.A., like you are from Southern Cali?

I have tried some abstract before and have studied it more than I have made any. I love all the post War expressionists mostly up to the present day, and the masters from the Blue Reiters group and Bahaus.

My regular media is oil on canvas or panel. I am also comfortable with watercolor. The abstract work I have done in the distant past was collage. It looked more like Modern art than "abstract" art. I would like to paint abstract/Modern though.

To answer your other question, I am not messy. I have tried to be, but I can't do it. LOL!

Thank you for your suggestions. They are giving me inspiration.

as Nike says, "Just Do It"

the processes/mediums/styles are personal anyway, you'll figure out what works for you and what becomes your favourites/inspires you the most - have fun.

I second that. Experiment, look around. You will find what you want to do.

Hi Easy,
You might try abstracting photos - breaking them up into shapes and then painting, it would give you a starting point from which to spring. Have fun

Re: Long Hiatus -- Wanting to Return

I can understand the weakness and pain and desire to sit. in 2016, I had a bad condition and was in intensive care for a while. It has been nearly a year and a half since the incident and I still have weakness and pain. It is hard to stand up-- my knees seem to have gone out. I sit for a while, and then stand. I also seem to sleep at least 10 hours per night. Exercise is good for my condition though. I think much of my problem is muscle atrophy, and I just have to get into physical shape slowly. I wish you the best!

This is entirely up to your personality. It is not a "should" issue... it is an issue of "what works for you", and to what degree you're willing to push yourself out of your present level of discomfort. If you push, then in time you may find yourself at a new level of ability. Or, you may find yourself completely angry and frustrated with rules you've imposed on yourself.

I've had both happen simultaneously, and expect it'll probably happen that way again. The frustration has kept me from painting for 2 years. But I did gain actual skill that still has value, to me personally, not just in terms of "realistic technique". I don't value realism; but I do value the ability to use what colors I want.

I would suggest, simply: keep what is good, throw out what is bad.

If it were that simple, then people wouldn't need any advice. They'd just do things and make excellent decisions about how to re-apply themselves. So don't feel bad when something makes you angry, as that's normal. The productive thing to do, is to reassess, keep what's working, and not limit yourself out of perceived obligations to Realism, Technique, Self-Esteem, whatever the negativizing overbearing demon happens to be.
