Has Anyone Used Fine Art America?

If anyone has used FAA please let me know or tell of your experience, good or bad. I just joined on Friday and will probably keep my old website as it is.
Thanks

Re: Has Anyone Used Fine Art America?

I have some stuff up there, and I do seem to get some visitors, but I don't foresee any significant sales. Nowadays the web is awash in art, and it has become almost impossible to stand out.

I agree with Brian. Anyone who says they are making a killing off the web with their art is

(a) incredibly good at what they do

(b) delusional

(c) selling their paintings to fellow Facebook artists, who in turn sell paintings to them

Re: Has Anyone Used Fine Art America?

Sorry for the attempt at humor, but I've signed up for FAA in the past, and I have no problem in saying that my work just wasn't nearly up to part with the rest of the folks on there. Nor did I really see any movement in sales going on. Just a lot of likes for those who create great art.

Kay, I have my paintings on FAA. It is a good professional site.

With regard to sales I do sell, but not very often. I also don't promote myself or participate on the site like you probably should to generate sales and interest.

For what it costs a year ($30) it is a no-brainer to be on there though.

Re: Has Anyone Used Fine Art America?

IIRC, the pricing process for painting is way over-complicated. Just like it is on DPW. I've gotten a little better at my art since then, but it was the above-mentioned that drove me away. Maybe I'm just thinking of DPW?

Re: Has Anyone Used Fine Art America?

Thanks! Right now it is free until I reach the limit maximum, then @ $30 pretty cheap. What I liked was the wide variety of products and ease of licensure and reproduction. Artspan only does prints and I'm paying them nearly $300/year. I do sell prints there but never have had sales. I just dropped out of Daily Painters dot com as the administrator took off the PayPal and any red dots from sold work. It was $39/month. I was selling from there fairly well, but he says others were not.

Re: Has Anyone Used Fine Art America?

Hi Kay, I've been on and off there for a few years. I've sold a couple of prints but nothing to write home about. I think as Katie says you need to be fairly active in promoting yourself and also on the forums. I think it's quite difficult to stand out, unless you do these things. I would say that the quality of the prints was very good and the site is professional.

Tried to delete this one to no avail

There are people who make a perfectly good living selling their art on the web, though they probably use more than Fine Art America. I would actually prefer it that way because I don't want to get too dependent on the South Africa economy. :-)

As others pointed out, it takes a lot of self-promotion. I'm not too sure how to do that. Participation on the FAA forums, perhaps, but there are hundreds upon hundreds of forums there, so it's a bit bewildering, and I'm not sure you meet anyone there other than other artists, who are not going to buy your work.

Re: Has Anyone Used Fine Art America?

Well, I do try and do lots of promotion and do get a fair amount of sales, just enough to pay studio utilities and insurance. Time will tell. Thanks for your responses!

What kind of promotion do you do?

Re: Has Anyone Used Fine Art America?

I use FB and Twitter for social media. In town here I write a monthly column for Living magazine our newspaper sponsors, so free advertising. Also monthly a large real estate firm here puts one of my works on their booklet covers. Multiple easels or display spaces at various businesses and banks.
All free and it keeps my name out there.

A bit of free publicity never hurts. :-)
I have been trying similar things, though all on the web; as I noted, I'm trying to find international markets so I don't get dependent on the whims of the local economy. Thus far without much success, though I haven't been at it for long. I have this feeling it takes several years of quite sustained effort on various social media before much of anything happens.
