Re: Daniel Smith Quinacridone Gold

I just purchased one of two tubes that Plaza Arts in Northern VA had this last weekend....wish I had gotten both! But the mixing results with their new formulation look good.

Re: Daniel Smith Quinacridone Gold

The Bellevue DS store in Seattle still has several tubes. Out of the goodness of my heart and the generosity of my spirit I only bought two of them.

(I presume the main Seattle store also has plenty, but I wasn't there this afternoon so I can't swear to it)

Re: Daniel Smith Quinacridone Gold

I recall coming back to watercolor in late 2009 and being blown away with the amount of info and knowledge available online. (No internet when I was painting in my teen years.) One of the first things I dove into was Handprint and the wonderful world of pigments. Even then the description of PO49 said supplies were limited and would eventually run out… and so that day has come.

End of an era indeed!

Re: Daniel Smith Quinacridone Gold

At least we knew this one was going to run out.

I've think I bought up plenty of Quin Gold - how much does one need of a favourite colour to last the rest of one's painting life???

I bought some DS PY153 new gamboge tubes before it switched, when that was running out, and some Schmincke dry pigment PY153 as I love that colour too.

I bought extra tubes of undersea green and sap green while they were still made with PO49.

And some tubes of Old Holland manganese blue while still available.

Yep - call me a hoarder!

OH manganese is still sort of available! I bought a tube from Blick a couple months ago.

How much is a "batch"? In other words, how much longer will the last tubes be on sale? I only have one spare tube.

I don't know if this is a useful comparison, but they discontinued Vivianite last year and Azurite this year. As of last week, there were 3 tubes of the Azurite at their main Seattle store and 1 tube of the Vivianite at their Bellevue store, and none available online. But those were both very expensive (series 7 and 6) and not workhorse colors like quin gold is.

Re: Daniel Smith Quinacridone Gold

Thanks for sounding out that death knell by email. Knowing it's coming is one thing, and finding out that today's the day was big news for me. Can I say that clicking on your link was very worthwhile, that set of swatches that compared the old formula to the new (in mixes with a dozen or so standard pigments) was interesting. I can only hope the notoriously clever DS marketing was being truthful, it assuaged my fears somewhat.

I still dashed to my Australian distributor to snap up stock, so thanks again.

Posted on FaceBook an hour ago:

Announcement: Coming Soon!

NEW DANIEL SMITH Quinacridone Gold Extra Fine ™ Watercolor 15ml tube.
It’s been seventeen years and the end of an era!

We have now produced our LAST batch of single pigment Quinacridone Gold PO 49 in a 15ml tube. Many years ago, the pigment manufacturer of Quinacridone PO 49 stopped producing this particular pigment shade and afforded us the opportunity to purchase all of their remaining stock. We made the purchase and the rest was history – we were the only source for this pigment for seventeen years.

We knew we would eventually run out. We are now excited to introduce you to our NEW DANIEL SMITH Quinacridone Gold Extra Fine ™ Watercolor in a 15ml tube which is a blend of two pigments (PO 48, PY 150).
SKU # 284600238
Series 2

Re: Daniel Smith Quinacridone Gold

I only have the old one, but a friend of mine has the new one and we compared them. The new one is similar in tints, but doesn't have the same golden color in mass tone, it's more like a dark orange than a brownish gold.
