Mastiffs WIP

Hello all. I haven't posted in a long while but inspiration and a cheeky commission brought me back to the drawing desk. This is a WIP of my friend's daughter's two Mastiff crosses who tragically died last year within a few months of each other. I'm using watercolour pencils so I guess this could be the right forum for the painting.
Im going to photograph the finished coloured pencil version of it before I activate the ink with water just in case things go completely haywire. At least then I have a decent version that's representative of them.
I'll post the watercoloured version soon.Name: IMG_382.jpg

Your drawing of the two dogs is beautiful. I look forward to seeing the color when you add it.

Will the dark on the left be continued on the right under the top dog?

Re: Mastiffs WIP

There will be some dark under the top dog, to get the shadow effect. In hindsight I wish I hadn't committed to the shadows so much, as there is a lot of heavy pencil there, which means a lot of activated colour once the water hits it. So I'll tread carefully when colouring it. I'm going to make an A3 print before I use brushes as I want to preserve the drawing side just in case...! The finished result I think will take it in a different direction to what's here now. But that's the beauty of the surprise.
Thank you for your kind words, it has been over a year since I did anything so the element of doubt is strong at the moment.
Isn't it lovely though to suddenly turn a corner and see the image live, after the initial worries.

Good idea making the print of your drawing because it is so lovely.

Coming back to painting after a hiatus can be worrisome (I know, I did it after a much longer break and had to relearn a lot of things).

Finished today. Activating the watercolour wasn't the scary monster I thought it might be.

Re: Mastiffs WIP

The color brought them to life beautifully. Well done.

You can post this finished version in The Gallery and add a link to your WIP thread here for those who missed it.

You did a beautiful job! I do think the brand of watercolor pencil can make a difference. Some of my cheaper ones don't dissolve well and leave more streaks. I haven't tried the watercolor pencil paper...sounds interesting.

What a great job you did. I was holding my breath to see what happened when you added the water. It turned out lovely. I have two brands of watercolor pencils, Derwent Aquatone, which is a solid stick of color, and Marco Raffine, which has a more traditional watercolor lead. I prefer the second, which dissolves better, even though it is much cheaper.
