September 2017 Watercolor Challenge - Nubble Point lighthouse

A beautiful photograph from the RIL by HOllyLL of the Nubble Point lighthouse in Maine. I hope you enjoy painting it.

Here is a large version in the RIL.

This is my version done in class 11x7˝ inches on Cotman 140lb Not. I rather rushed it towards the end (2 hour class), could do more work on the rocks. No masking applied, I painted around the whole fence and put in the gaps in pencil.

There is no time limit on challenges, when you finish yours post it here and in the Gallery.

Doug

A very nice painting, Doug. I like the way you created the fence. A good and simple subject that many will appreciate.

That was quick Dave, welcome to the challenges.

A nice implementation , you captured the rugged rocks well. I noticed the projecting window on the side of your lighthouse, something I had missed. A few shadows would help, particularly on the lighthouse to emphasise the roundness,

Am looking forward to giving this a try. Like the strong colors and shapes offered in this picture..maybe try something new? I like your interpretation Doug in the patterning of the rocks and then the texture in the ones in front. A very bright and sunny painting! Lots of great texture in yours Dave, love the water.

Didn't have a lot of time to spend on this one, but enjoyed the challenge. Good subject, Doug. I am a sucker for a light house.

P.S. I used additional references for this image. Hope it is not cheating.

12" x 16" Arches 140# CP, WN paints.

Glad you enjoyed it Scott, I see you changed the direction of the light and added corresponding shadows.

First poke at a monthly pic, I think this took 15 minutes, it's only 8x10

This challenge prompted me to make an account and join in! Here's my go:

I struggle with rocks, so this was good practice. Thank you for posting the photo!

Painted with Koh-i-noor Hardtmuth paints on MontMarte 190gsm paper, 25cm by 12cm. Cheap art materials for the win!
