Re: September Plant Parade

Thanks Kay - succulents are very popular on WC recently - in the WDEs and elsewhere!
Isn't that magenta flower gorgeous?

Re: September Plant Parade

Here's another succulent photo.
This was my Christmas Cactus hanging basket in flower last year. Unfortunately, it was in my bbq area over the Winter (under cover) but still managed to get frosted, so some of it has now died off. I hope the remainder of it will still flower again this year!

Here is a link. http://succulent-plant.com/thumbnails.html I had no idea that some of these were considered succulents.

Re: September Plant Parade

Love to grow the Christmas cactus and they usually are very hardy.
Thanks Tam for posting this link!

Re: September Plant Parade

I used to grow lots of Epiphullum Cactus, for years - which of course are classed as a Succulent.
I grew them in hanging baskets in our conservatory, but they were such a lot of work watering them, so I got fed-up with them and stuck them outside in our bbq area, and thought they were safe there! But no, most of them frosted in the Winter frosts, and died unfortunately.
So I was going through some old photos and found some photos of them, which I thought you might like to see. I love the colors of them. I wish I still had the plants! I also had a glorious white one...which didn't last long with my watering routine!

I've had one for (four?) years - it has tried to flower twice on its own - but they are sad, sorry little blossoms that quickly fall off. I tried last year to do the dark/no water thing for months leading up to Xmas to encourage it to flower .... nothing.

Beautiful flowers, Vivien. I do believe they are called cactus orchids?

Re: September Plant Parade

Gorgeous photos! Sorry they died though. I did the garage storage thing with three, the little clay goat, a big yucca, and assorted cacti. They all were placed under a west window so they received light. Each had a wine bottle filled w/ water stuck into the soil and my yucca had two bottles. When empty those were refilled which was about a month, so no top watering necessary. They were protected from the cold/frost here at our New Mexico place...now are outside in the sun and doing well. The trick is not to overwater.
