Smile Approaching storm,wip,

oils on canvas board, size 12x20 inches
I started this painting in 1965,based on a copy that i had a reference photo of which i now can not find anywhere on the web!,I stored the painting in my loft where it remained for 52 years and apart from a few scratches is still in good condition.I am now going to rework it by removing the tall ship and doing more work on the sky and sea, hope it works out ok!.
Dave.

Re: Approaching storm,wip,

Personally I'd omit the red sail, and put another fishing boat to the right of the other two, probably with tan sails well reefed down. Not sure you need to do anything with the sky, and the sea looks excellent.
Should make a great painting.

Re: Approaching storm,wip,

Dave. My first impression when I opened it was WOW this is awesome!!! Usually first impressions do not lie I am not an expert in composition, especially colors but I think this red sail is creating a sense of danger and the scene would lose without it. Well, maybe not THAT red haha.

Love the ocean- very threatening and real. Great job.

I would proudly hang it just the way it is.

Re: Approaching storm,wip,

This is the uncropped picture showing the full boat.I have decided to keep this boat and re-work the best that i can without references,i will also include 2 crew members and rework the sky and sea.

Re: Approaching storm,wip,

If you are keeping it as is, I'd brown the sail down a bit. It looks (to me anyway) like the modern version of the old 'barked' sails.

Re: Approaching storm,wip,

I have removed the topsail, shown some running rigging, added 2 fishing men, added gale warning flags, done a little more work on the waves and sky.I still have to do the standing rigging and a little more work on the men. When it is finished I may re-post it it as a Seascape!!,

Re: Approaching storm,wip,

Really like the changes you've made with this one. I definitely prefer the second version of your work. Also, I like how the red sail clearly stands out in this picture. Everything else has already been said before, I really don't have to say anything about the waves 'cause they're beautifully done.

Re: Approaching storm,wip,

Thanks Jim,I have darkened the red a little bit but it stills seems red on the photo.
I am a little disappointed about no input from Bryan,I think I know why!but I did have my reasons!.

Re: Approaching storm,wip,

I have darkened the sails a bit more. The rigging as been a problem with not being certain what kind of vessel she is(dutch i think!),I have an old book called "Gaff Rig" which helped a little. So i have used 3 shrouds each side as the standing rigging,I am open to suggestions, but will leave it this way for now.

Re: Approaching storm,wip,

I think this is the best version of your work so far. The boat looks more even with the sails darkened. Especially the right part of the sail looks much better compared to the first version.
