Pls Move to Structured Critque.Jack's day at the beach

MY IMAGE(S):

GENERAL INFORMATION:
Title: Move to Structured Critque.Jack's day at the beach
Year Created: 2017
Medium: Pastel
Surface: Board
Dimension: 9x12
Allow digital alterations?: Yes!

MY COMMENTS:
I'm particularly conce<br>ed with the "from-a-photo" look that is still retained here despite some adjustments I made.
Also, it's my thought that I got too caught-up in the fact it is recognizeable as a dog and forgot to incorporate proper lighting for form. He appears to be pasted onto the water.

MY QUESTIONS FOR THE GROUP:
I am looking for any advice on any of the areas. I have always been able to re-create a likeness of things but I have not moved past that basic point and I am very intent on moving past this stage. I have not had any formal training and it is this lack of critique that I am desperate for. I need to understand what it is I am failing to see.

I think it looks pretty good overall.
Maybe sharpen some edges on the dog , a bit more highlighting ?

The curve in the foreground sand/water line, maybe give it a little variation, so it is less of a dividing line effect..

Re: Pls Move to Structured Critque.Jack's day at the beach

You are so right. I didn't even look at the water-line, I just painted it as is without a thought to its contribution. Your idea would give much more interest right off the bat.
The B&W version not only underscores your highlights suggestion but right away I see I need to adjust the value on his right shoulder and chest.
By sharpening edges, what areas do you see needing it? I ask because I had it sharper before and then softened some to make it look less like a cut-out. I'm thinking perhaps I went too soft on his backside.
Thank-you for these insights!

Maybe just define his front legs a bit more, or compare with some other images of dogs running in water to see how they look..
Oh check for shadows under him & other dogs in images.

Thank-you both. You pointed out 6 areas that I simply could not see on my own. I truly appreciate your time.
