Coloured/Pastel Pencil Project..Jan/Feb

Our project challenge for Jan and Feb
will be working in coloured and pastel
pencils.

I will be posting a few photos from
our gallery..but please post your own
that you think would be a good
pencil challenge !

The nice thing about working with coloured
pencils is that you can buy them at
such reasonable prices !

Please post your works in this thread..
you have two months..so if you would
like to post w.i.p's please do..

Here are two photos to begin with:

fruit..plate by mprince:

winter blues by lisilk !

Here's a colour pencil portrait of a Mandrill done a couple of years ago.

He was done with student quality Derwent cps on black paper.

I enjoyed doing him at the time. But maybe the Derwent studio cps were a bit thin in colour. I've since got some artists grade cps and so looking forward to seeing the difference.

Juicy fruit!! Love the shine that makes them look so fresh!

I am hoping to make a start on colouring those little blue birds! I have the outline drawn!

Re: Coloured/Pastel Pencil Project..Jan/Feb

Here's where I am with my bluebirds in cp.

Watercolour hotpress paper and a mix of cp but mainly polychromos make. About 10 by 8 ins.

I think I'll leave it here and not do a background. Maybe in my next cp, I will incorporate the background.

I am still learning with cp and I wanted to focus on the little birds.

Sorry but the colours did not come out well in this scan. I'll try to photo it later!

I got a couple of blender pencils from Derwent and prismacolour on Amazon. Both very good for belending/softening the edges of forms.

How is everyone else coming along with cps? Do you like using them? I like the control ...and the ability to get representational colour effects by mixing pencils. Plus you can lay it aside if you get interrupted by the phone or doorbell...not so easy to stop when using paint!

I am scared to go too dark with cp, however...in case I mess up. Maybe I will work up to that!

oh these are so lovely and delicate June !!! I would not put a b/g either..would take away from the birds ! I have actually used an electric eraser when using c/p's ..sometimes to erase mistakes, and sometimes to tone it down...seems to work ...I am going to start another this weekend, just not sure which one yet ..tyree

Re: Coloured/Pastel Pencil Project..Jan/Feb

Alcohol is good for blending too. Rubbing alcohol on a q-yip. Or an alcohol ink blender for marker pens. I must try this on an image with a smooth texture..like fruit or waterlilies...

looking forward to viewing your next cp work, Tyree!!
