Hmt Oxfordshire In Hong Kong 1957

Oils on canvas size 23x33 inches
The scene is from my imagination but using ref photos for correct details.
It shows the Bibby line troopship Oxfordshire arriving in Hong Kong in 1957,before the Hong Kong scenery was marred by so called progress!
Dave,c&c welcome

Sadly,as well as the view being marred by skyscrapers and high rise flats!,most of the real junks have long since gone. What we have today are mostly tourist junks.

Nice painting, one of my favourite 'runs ashore', one memorable one was was drinking with Tommy Cooper and his wife in one of the top hotels (can't remember which) he was performing there, it was quite a session!.

Thanks Jim,hope you had a good Hogmanay!,sounds like you enjoyed your run ashore in Hong Kong.Sadly although I worked by on the Oxfordshire,I was sent to join the ss leicestershire on a trip to Rangoon,so I never got to see Hong Kong.

awww, you old salts...

love the supporting cast here...hills, architecture, smaller vessels...really sets of the star, handsome ship that she is. really fine work.

The above image is a detail section from a larger painting 24x48 inches that was to big to show details on the photo, however i have uploaded the full painting to show missing parts.

I well remember the skyline when it was like that Dave. I wonder if there is the same variety of shipping as there was in the sixties, just before the big boxes came in. The painting captures the HK atmosphere well.

Yes Jim it has changed a lot!,it is still a very busy port with container vessels and many cruise ships, but it has lost its old world charm.
