Caribou Family (XP from Animal and Wildlife)

Hi all,

I was recently commissioned to make a family of three caribou sculptures: a bull, a cow, and a calf. I was thrilled to get this commission, but with a three-week deadline, it was a push to get them done. I spent days doing very little except winding wire. I had hoped for found items to use for the antlers, but nothing seemed to look quite right, so I ended up making them in wire.

My client requested them to be made in copper wire with silver wire for the white areas such as the necks and tails. I gave them to her last Monday, and am happy to say she was very pleased with them. She especially liked the hooves, which was a relief because I'd never done cloven hooves before. I had so much fun making the feet, and it gives me some ideas for other hooved animals, such as cattle or deer.

Here is the whole family together in several shots. Unfortunately, I had to take the pictures indoors as it was after dark (and -20 outside!), so they are not of the best quality. I did my best, and here they are.

I will add photos of the sculptures individually in a minute.

C&C welcome, though these belong to my client now. I can always learn for later. Thanks for looking!

Re: Caribou Family (XP from Animal and Wildlife)

Here are some detail shots of the sculptures.

They are made with almost every color and size wire in my supplies. Copper wire of gauges 18, 20, 24 and 26. Fencing wire and paddle wire of gauges 17, 18, 20, 22, and 26. Dark annealed wire of gauges 16, 18, 22 and 24 I think. The dark annealed is seen only in the hooves, but the legs of all three sculptures are made up of dark annealed (which is stronger and more rigid than copper) and were then covered with copper. The ears on all three are wing or feather pendants of copper color. The tails of the adults are from a pair of whitish-silver earrings, and the calf has a copper-colored feather for a tail.

The Bull

Measures 6 1/2 inches long by 8 1/4 tall by 5 inches wide. I made him heftier and thicker than the cow so he would clearly be the masculine one. I also made his antlers more showy. Caribou and reindeer have such spectacular antlers!

The Cow

Measures 6 1/2 inches long by 7 1/2 inches tall by 3 inches wide. She has a slimmer look, with smaller antlers, prettier ears, and a little heart and jewel dangling from her neck.

The Calf

A little guy, measuring 4 1/4 inches long by 4 inches tall by 1 1/2 inches wide. I made him with long legs, with his head up as he looks to his parents. He also has a small pendant with a green jewel in it.

Thanks again for checking in!

Wow, Jenna! Amazing how you capture personality in these. You nailed the mannerisms of the bull, cow and calf (like the inquisitive look of the calf, with his ears just right). Way to go!

Richard, I am so glad to hear that! I did some research on caribou and studied pictures to try to get the feel right in these sculptures. I am happy that you feel these have the right look for caribou. Thank you so much!

Thank you so much, Ron. That's very kind of you!

Thanks, Derek. I really appreciate your nice comments!

Thank you, Jo. When my client asked for three sculptures in three weeks, I'm not sure I liked the idea. But it worked out ok in the end. I appreciate your kind comments.
