Recreating a Flemish Book of Hours

Here is a WIP recreating one of the pages from a Flemish Book of Hours, mid to late 15th century.

Any latin readers will notice a couple misspellings and perhaps a badly interpreted letter here and there. This started as a practice for drawing late Lettre Batarde (Bourguinogne.)

The composition is off with too little negative space on the left and top and too much on the right and bottom. I may be able to add some leaves and buds to balance this out, though.

Comments and any criticism is welcome, so do your worst.

Red face Re: Recreating a Flemish Book of Hours

Day one larger here.

Day 2 here.

Day three here.

I should finish the flowers tonight. I'm trying to decide if I can wash the background in bronze without spoiling it completely. I should have done that first, but I never thought I'd take it this far.

This is absolutely stunning!! I love it!

I do think a wash would look great, but I understand your trepidation...maybe try on another sheet to test?

What a project! I like the colours. A bronze background would complement it, I think. Look forward to seeing the finished work.

Beautiful lettering and I love the little flower paintings! A very attractive piece of art!
