Rembrandt's Hat

Rather new to portraiture but making my way slowly. Did this portrait which is a combination of my niece, a Bouguereau and a bit of improv. Stole the hat from Rembrandt - made it so much more interesting!
C&C welcome.

Re: Rembrandt's Hat

It’s nice how you mix the modern and the classical so successfully Judith. Your nieces face lends itself to the classical treatment very favourably, I like how you have interpreted the mouth.

Re: Rembrandt's Hat

This is a truly beautiful portrait! It meets all the criteria that I greatly appreciate. It is smooth, blended, with sfumato, and it does not appear as "carved granite", as many popular portraits appear today.

Re: Rembrandt's Hat

Nicely done. Beautiful job on the nose. I noticed her left eye is slightly smaller, and left eyebrow slightly lower than that of the right.

The highlight on her right shoulder slightly confuses me, because I'm not sure where your light source is coming from.

Overall it's wonderfully done. I very much look forward to seeing more.

Re: Rembrandt's Hat

Jess, it could very well be that's how the woman looks.

I'm with Bill on this, a lot of the portraits over on Facebook look like very rugged, with intentional scratches, scrapes and smudges all over them. (like it's supposed to be some random surge of energy or something)

Re: Rembrandt's Hat

I believe that what might be happening here is the illusion that the left eye is smaller because the hat is close to it. I'm probably wrong but it could be very accurate and I know when two objects or subjects are exactly the same in close proximity especially side by side it only takes a subtle difference to suggest a dissimilarity to human sight

Re: Rembrandt's Hat

Thanks for your comments Muad-dib and Matilda. About the eyes, Jess I agree that there is something slightly amiss. Sometimes it's best to leave the painting for a while and come back at it later - with a fresh eye.

It is a lovely portrait and has a wonderful rich feel to it. Your niece is a lovely model and you did a fantastic painting of her.

Re: Rembrandt's Hat

Very interesting combination of modern and classic. Nose and mouth are lovely.
