Award of Arms Scroll

Just finished doing the basic lettering on this. The big versal is more like a drawing project but I'll update when I finish the scroll.

Having gotten involved in Society for Creative Anachronism again I expect to do more of these and have a lot of fun with different styles of illumination and lettering. The kingdom (regional group) always needs lots and I'm enjoying this, it's been over a decade since I last did one.

Award of Arms Scroll calligraphy
9" x 12" dip pen and ink on Cotman Not surface watercolor paper.
Border in Pigma Micron, will be painted with gouache, fancy capital will be done in colored inks and possibly some gold.

Re: Award of Arms Scroll

Thank you! Just finished inking and putting gold on the big capital A - taking the photo also showed me where the gold was thin or didn't quite touch the line, so I was able to go back and add a second layer to strengthen its opacity after taking this photo:

Gold painted capital A detail.

Onward to painting the border! It's nearly done!

Thank you! Glad it's inspiring. I plan on doing more, just working out the design for the next one.

Re: Award of Arms Scroll

Great effort and good decoration.
Next time don't use such a steep pen-angle for your text. It has spoilt tis one. Your vertical strokes are thinner than horizontals [a no-no] so don't use greater than 45 degrees.

Re: Award of Arms Scroll

Geoff, thanks. I think I may have been trying to squeeze the text, will improve on my next one. This is my first after many years. Will watch pen angle from here on out.

Yes, it will! That's the awesome thing about doing these, someone who receives it is likely to treasure it for life!

Re: Award of Arms Scroll

Hi Robert, very nice, and me too, haven't done any for 15 years, but still have my gear, and am looking forward to returning, just looking for a suitable starting subject. Used to be seriously into The Mira Calligraphiae Monumenta ( Georg Bockskay and Joris Hoefnagel) and also the Work of the Limbourg Brothers.

I heard about your life threatening illness, and truly hope you recover well, but fear this is a nasty one with long term implications.

Terry

Re: Award of Arms Scroll

are there any tips for doing the borders? I would like to do personal cards like this for people but I am not sure how to start. I just bought a bunch of calligraphy stuff from John something or another (an online store) but the border would really add something to it.
