Re: General Sketchbook - Part 7

A variation on the tutorial TREES by Mike Sibley http://www.sibleyfineart.com/tutorial--draw-trees.htm

Goals were to do a few trees successfully, and successfully add the man and the Belgian Sheepdog all with apprpopriate form and values. I had the dog's rear a bit larger and should have left it so. In fact, I'll add it to the drawing again.

comments, crits, suggestios welcome.

Re: General Sketchbook - Part 7

Why have I not sketched or doodled much since I was a teenager. I see your works here and remember the fun I had doing those 40 years ago. I have done a mere handful over the years. I purchased a new sketch pad and will try to sketch more, as I know it will improve my oil paintings (another old hobby I am trying to resurrect).

No. 2 pencil (as a drafter from the pre-computer days, I believe this is the equivalent of a HB) on 6"x8" #140 paper with vellum surface. These in prep for future paintings I am considering.

Re: General Sketchbook - Part 7

Whoa! I don't remember putting so much effort into pencil portraits when I was younger. I decided not to use the 'squares' method that I used for my recent oil portraits and just had at it, like in my youth. Practice, practice and more practice. Seeing what is really there and not what you think is there is a big key to this.

Kudos to Hockey Dad and the fun he shows with his celebrity sketches.

This one of my granddaughter caused me to use my eraser many times. I think the nose is still a bit off center. #2 pencil on 50# fine tooth sketch paper.

Re: General Sketchbook - Part 7

After months of playing around and learning, via trips into other mediums including oil pastels, charcoal/carbon/graphite, Oil Bars, and watercolor, and plein air, not so much studio work, I finally feel the urges to do portraits again, and have expanded to dogs now and again, as well as landscapes.
I draw my subjects out, often requiring several drafts to come close to the appearance of the subject. Like kagiva59, I am working at freehand drawing now rather than graphing or tracing. Interestingly to me, the more I draw, the more I like it--after I get past the "writers block" syndrome.
Here's a couple of recent ones:
This is a 5 minute drawing of a photo I took a year ago and turned into an oil painting.
The other 2, I'm just beginning to draw dogs. I spent some time on both of these, and plan to do several more of this pose. It may turn into a painting, too.

Re: General Sketchbook - Part 7

If it was a sketch of anyone else I would move on. But a granddaughter has to be done right. So I centered the nose and then realized I had to raise it also. Then I corrected the proportion of the chin. Now I need to hide it before I see something else. Good thing I used a soft graphite, but I wish I had a heavier paper.
