Dragon's Cave

This shows the dragon inside his cave guarding his treasure, while the warrior is trying to sneak in from the entrance and take some from him. It's mostly colored pencil with some pen work.

Re: Dragon's Cave

Sheila, this is very nice. The lighting on the wing is very well done and the dragon has very neat details. So what kind of paper, size and colored pencils? You have to fill us in with all the details!!

Re: Dragon's Cave

Hi all. I appreciate your comments on this picture, and the "Praying Mantis" before it. Some of you have asked about the medium, so it's mainly Prismacolor pencils on 14"x16" Strathmore Vellum Bristol. I like the tooth of the vellum as the colored pencil needs something to fill into or will be very flat looking.
After I apply several related pencil colors rather hard, I go over it all with white colored pencil. Then I scrape most of this off with a serrated bread knife (to leave a texture effect). Then I use a pink eraser until it all has some tooth again. Then add some more colored pencil, and repeat all that process until it all gets rich and glossy. I've seen others of you do this, too, so I don't mean to talk down to anyone who already knows to do this layering.
I use some "Presto" white-out pen to highlighted areas. I dab a little Presto on and quickly smudge it with my finger so yellow, orange, & white pencil will go over it again.
Then some black bic pen at the very last. (i don't want to get too much black outline. Maybe shouldn't use the bic pen at all.)
So, my pictures should be called mixed media, actually. Nothing high tech, but as you who do colored pencil know, it's very time consumming, and takes several weeks off & on.

Re: Dragon's Cave

Beautiful, you've captured the surprised and angered expression of the dragon perfectly through facial and body language.

I'm impressed, that is really well done. Also its very detailed, and I like how you got the light beams coming in from the entrance.

Re: Dragon's Cave

That gold looks wonderful! I kinda want to fight them both to take it for myself.

I didn't know that about working with a knife and CPs, but I just don't have the patience to work in colored pencil til it comes alive like that
