Quote of the Day

Finished this yesterday and I'm not sure if all the elements are working together - birds eye view of "road" element changes to zero point perspective of rectangular shapes, and "screen-print" style of triangles off-set by a pair of quotes at the top. Your thoughts and C&C welcome.

Hi Sandra: It is a case of not seeing the whole due to the need to scroll up and down .

I really like your style. texture and color are working really well. I like the composition and love the city feeling to this, but at the same time I see desert?

Re: Quote of the Day

Yes - there are some desert elements mixed with city scape elements. The "roots" of the buildings change from inorganic to organic form when they go below ground and pass into the desert region. The road is the road to "nowhere" and the triangles raining down from above suggest a third environment/plane. I must admit that this piece started out as a strictly contemporary/non-representational piece. It surprised me a bit when the the rectangular shapes took on the form of a cityscape. Adding the vegetation was an afterthought.

Fascinated by your techniques and areas of colours which work so well alongside each other. A very attractive and interesting picture. My only pick would be the white marks at the centre of the road. I think they would look better toned down a little as they are very eye-catching?
Intriguing and unusual.

Re: Quote of the Day

I'm completely new here and just exploring what goes on so I hope you won't mind me chiming in. I really love your unusual colours in this. I'd probably end up scuffing those road marks about a bit too. Mind, they are an important reference point in the picture...they might develop a bit, could get interesting!
Very nice piece, I've never been to the USA but it references a certain sort of iconic landscape to me (something I wish I had seen for real so I could validly paint it!)

Re: Quote of the Day

Thanks for the suggestion on the lines in the road. I'm thinking I will go with a shade of grey. It's so helpful to have others take a second look.

I think it is a good sign when you are painting something and everyone wants to join in. Mind, I'm not so brave. I've posted works in progress in other places but now prefer to hold them till I'm ready. And then it's a case of like it or lump it, I'm just the painter.

Re: Quote of the Day

Good morning everyone. Thanks to all who commented on the white marks in the road at the bottom of this painting. I took some time yesterday and "greyed" them up a bit. Here are the before and after shots. To my eye they blend better with the overall painting now. C&C welcome.

Derek: Press CTRL and the minus (-) key at the same time to make the screen image smaller. CTRL and + to increase it.

When I first saw just the road (without having done the screen shrinking thing) I wasn't sure - the deliberately flat perspective of the road threw me at first. But seeing the whole thing I rather like it. I suppose it still is a road to nowhere given that it bypasses the city in the background.

MZ_sketch_pad is right. it does work

Re: Quote of the Day

I really like it SJM and think that greying those white marks down a bit worked. Plenty of quotes to fill in there...'I'm on the Road to Nowhere... is one or Hotel California is jumping to my mind...'on a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair....
