Let's see......

Your studio!

What makes your studio 'work' for you?

Perhaps there is something in your studio like in furniture arrangement, set-up, storage and lighting for example that would be good advice for others.

Come on--SHOW AND TELL!

Re: Let's see......

Hi Judi!

We get to see yours too right?

OK, here are some pics of my studio. The first shows the closet area where I keep all my pastels. Gee, do I have enough?

Behind the closet door on the right is where I store most of my canvases for oil painting.

The second and third pics show the basic layout and setup. I've also shown some close-ups of the bins and drawers where I keep my paper. Right now my table surfaces are in use for a watercolor I'm working on.

The bins mostly hold paper pads while the three large flat drawers hold my flat paper for pastels and watercolor, etc.

The smaller stacked drawers on the tables are for all my oil paints and drawing supplies, as well as watercolor tubes and oil pastels. The built-in drawer in my easel holds all of my "in use" oil paints while the stacked drawers on the table hold the new overstock tubes. I'm in the process of trying to upgrade my paint brands.

I admit I have a bit of a "Mother Hubbard" complex. Oh yeah and those pesky VIP coupons Jerry's keep sending me for extra discounts on art supplies.

The other half of the room (not shown) is my "office" and computer area. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone else's studios!

Wow Michael! That's quite a studio! Keep on painting those pictures...even if it's just for yourself.

Re: Let's see......

Of course Jason
I love your studio. It is admirable how neat and clean it is!
Love your easel--mine is a tad wobbly so I have to stablize it by sitting and using my feet on the bottom brace.
I really like your vertical organization! Wow---- that's a lot of pastels!

Michael--That is some studio! Do you do custom designed jewelry?
Your drafting desk is beautiful!!!!

Hopefully we will be seeing more studios. Maybe everyone is tiddying up. If so, next week we can do bathrooms.

My studio is rather simple. I do love all the windows.

Re: Let's see......

Great studio Judi! I like all those windows. I like the rug too...it reminds me of Kandinsky.

Thanks for the compliments on my studio! I actually am something of a neatnick. I try to clean up and put everything in its place when I am done painting for the night.

Re: Let's see......

Really neat studios you all have!

Jason, I could do with a dose of neatnick. But, seriously, you clean up *every* night?

I'd rather show my bathroom than my studio... The trouble with the studio is that it is also storage. The trouble with me is that I'm no neatnick...

Re: Let's see......

In the quest for more space I did a little woodwork a few days ago. Made a pencil stand (need another yet) and a plan chest/pastel tray.
Best wishes
Gary

Re: Let's see......

I love seeing everyone's work areas.

Jason- They make medication for that.... . Seriously nice set up and if you ever need to give some of those pastels a nice home in the country PM me...

Michael- Nice set up. lovely desk. I always wanted to paint too, but people pay me to design... I'd love to make a living painting instead. Maybe we'll both get what we wish someday...

Judi- I love my windows too even though I only have 2. Looks like you have room to expand, I still see floorspace.

Gary- I love the pencil holder and the easy access to your pastels.

If you guys aren't afraid of a little mess, I'll post mine.

Re: Let's see......

Here's mine. It's small, I've seen walk in closets 3 times as big, but it's the first time I've had space of my own. I had cleaned it before we left for vacation so it doesn't look like it normally does.

I love my big drafting desk and flat file. I put my pastels in one of the drawers because of the dogs and I'm clumsy. They're safer in there. I desperately need a heavier easel, but that will have to wait.

Sharen: You have to understand that I don't suffer from insanity. I enjoy every moment of it.

Your studio is awesome! I love the flat files as a pastel chest...great idea! Looks like you've got a whole bunch of juicy colors in there.

Blick just came out with their own line of studio easels, and they seem to be reasonably priced.

Re: Let's see......

Jason - I know some people go crazy when things aren't in order.

Some things I'm crazy organized about (bills, computer filing/backup, etc) but most things I follow the general idea of "somewhere in the near vicinity".

The flat files, light table and one of the desk chairs came from employers that didn't need them anymore when they switched from manual film stripping to a computers.

Re: Let's see......

Sharon, I love that old desk tucked in the corner being repurposed. Most everyone has repurposed pieces saving the pocketbook and landfill.

Jason, that blows my mind. I am no neatnik, either.

If asked, I would say my studio is on wheels in a rolling crate. If pressed, I'd say it hangs out in the corner of the living room and sometimes is splayed out on the couch. While too large, mine is pretty portable.

Extras in their original boxes line tubs in the closet along with flat paper carriers. An unused shower stall was transformed into vertical filing for boards and glass. My bedroom is where I frame and that closet houses lots of frames, backing boards, etc. A great trick is hanging stuff in bags from hangers in closets. I have a lot of supplies off the floor that way.

I guess my stuff is pretty spread out all over. Not sure if it actually calls for unification, b/c I'm pretty used to it now and I'd never be able to find a thing.
