Cat's Eye Tutorial

Hlee!
Wonderful demonstration for a cat's eye...and for the layering effect with coloured pencils. I know everyone will benefit from the demo.

Thank you for putting together a great article for WetCanvas!

Very interesting and informative. Using a layer of white between colours as a base colour is something I'm definately going to try out!

Thank You!

Paul

Hi!

Cat lovers should love this, hlee!

A minor correction: the diamond shaped green area in the middle of the eye is actually the cat's pupil and the yellow is the iris. I think the small round object in the middle there is a reflection but it's definitely not a pupil.

Unlike a human's pupil which is a round hole, a cat's pupil is a vertical slit that can enlarge to cover the whole front of the eye in darkness. When its full opened, its round but in lighter conditions, the pupil is smaller and the slit is very apparent. Its very common not to see the whites of a cat's eye at all.

Here is a diagram that compares the cat's eye to a human eye.

Can you see the difference?

Many animals eyes share this trait: frogs, snakes.

Lightbulb

I had no idea that you could achieve such a realist result with color pencils nor did I understand that it would entail so many colors. You make it so easy to understand you even make it seem simple enough for me to try some day.
I am still learning to draw with a regular pencil I will never look at an eye the same way again . Thank you for the gift of seeing a different way!

This is great! I am curious to know the size of this CP piece. I am currently working on my own version of the same eye in acrylics on a 12 x 12 canvas. My techniques are necessarily different but the effect is similar.

Thank you for this - it is just what I wanted

Re: Cat's Eye Tutorial

What a place to start! I am new here and your tutorial was just what I was looking for I have only ever done a few paintings, got an urge to give it a go a few years back. My passion is Cats and Dogs. My very first attempt at painting was of my Cream Persian cat "Brutus" (see my avitar). I found the eyes the most difficult to do. Can't wait to try your method. Thanks. Cathy
