? How do you get painted canvas to book cover?

I have been doing book covers for a friend but I have only been doing them on small enough canvas to copy onto a personal scanner. What would you suggest is the best way to get personal work into a book cover computer program? Should I continue to work on a small scale or would you suggest photographing the final piece. Also, how or in what scale would you do a wrap cover? I am such a newb. Please help with any and all suggestions this world is very new to me.

Wish I could help more, but my first thought is to ask your local printer.

Alex: Perfect answer.

The printer will either do all of that for you (maybe for a fee...)
or you can have the artwork photo'd (for a fee...)
or learn to do it yourself if you have a decent camera.

Lots of advice in the Photo Forum on how to photo a painting, a frequent topic.

Photoshop also has a Photomerge program that will take and assemble pieces into a whole, useful when the entire artwork won't all fit onto a scanner bed. It has limitations.

Local places may also own a large bed scanner to use (for a fee...)
or you can buy one for the price of an old used car

Your local colleges may have a phot dept that will teach you how to do this, or you may find a sympathetic professor who will do it as a class project. Make friends with them, they are always helpful

and lastley, check with local Arts organizations, they may also be helpful

Think outside the box!!!

Greg

Re: ? How do you get painted canvas to book cover?

You can (1.) continue doing it on your scanner, considering that the actual book cover is not very large, (2.) consider doing the cover itself in a digital program from your scanned sketch, or (3.) do a larger work and get it scanned at a print shop or somewhere that can scan larger surfaces. Or you can do it large and take a good photo of it.

I get quite good results by doing covers on a scale that will fit my desktop scanner. Doing a cover the same size or just a little larger than the final product will help you remember not to get too detailed for the final size.

I don't know how large your paintings are, but I use a Mustek 2400 flatbed that will scan a 17” x 11 3/4”.

I often scan A1 size pictures on A4 size scanner. It take a lot of work to put it together, but it works for me. Going to print company is expensive and photography never gives me perfect sharp results.

Thank you very much. You know, I'm not in school anymore but it is very possible someone might take pity on me.
