Gluing down watercolor paper

I am in the process of tearing up an old watercolor (140# HP) and making a collage. I want to glue it to 300# rough watercolor paper. I am using Liquitex matte medium. I first tried to dilute it a little and am now using full strength. It isn't working real well as the 140# wants to buckle. Am I using the wrong glue? I put the glue on both pieces and then a heavy book on top of it until it drys. At this rate it will take me forever to finish. Any suggestions? Is there a better choice for glue? This is the first time I have tried to glue to heavy papers together. Most of the time I use paper that is 300# for support and paper that aren't 80#s or less on top. Perhaps someone out there has a better process. I thank you for any help you can give me. Jude

Re: Gluing down watercolor paper

Sometimes I wet the paper first if that won't ruin the color or image. But yes, I almost always find that I have to put them in some sort of press. Wetting both sides helps, but the press is still needed. Sigh.

Re: Gluing down watercolor paper

Thank you. I can not wet the right side. In fact the paint was flaking off the top. The paintings I am using are from a workshop with Pat SanSoucie that I took years ago. She does a lot or pouring through paper towels and kleenex placed on top of watercolor paper to create texture. I enjoyed the workshop but never used any of her ideas afterwards. I am tired of looking at all that wonderful texture and not using it. So yesterday I decided to make a collage out of it. After I glued, I ended up putting a huge collage yearbook from K-State on top of it. It did the trick. So I guess I did it right. Jude

Re: Gluing down watercolor paper

Cyndi,
I have been a member here for six years and have never posted a picture of my art work. I don't even know how to do it. I lurk around the boards and occasionally post a comment or a question. But that is about it. I am a moderately successful artist who has achieved some nice awards both locally and nationally. I don't consider the collage I did yesterday an award winner but then 95% of my work is that way. It was just experimentation. I am also getting ready to teach a collage class. My main media of choice is watercolor. Combining watercolor and collage is a perfect marriage for me. Collage helps me recharge my creative batteries.

Re: Gluing down watercolor paper

Hi,

My art instructor has always advised us to use YES glue. It comes in a huge jar, and works well with watercolor. A jar of it lasts forever.
