Underwater WIP

Hi everyone, this is my first post of a work in progress on WetCanvas.

I went snorkeling for the first time last week, off of Catalina Island in Southern California, and it was so relaxing and inspiring. These bright orange fish are everywhere, called Garibaldi, and one of them just followed me around. I got home and dug out some reference photographs (I'm working from memory plus three photos for accuracy).

It's such a nice memory for me that I wanted to share it with everyone. Now I can't wait to get my SCUBA certification, if I could only figure out how to paint underwater.

Would welcome any comments and thanks for looking!

Lorna

and a little closer up... it took me about an hour to get the composition and sketch down (there's kelp hiding in there too but hard to see), and then probably another hour to mix and get the first few body washes down.

and a little further along... (wetcanvas really is good for when you're waiting for paint to dry!)

I like this a lot. Your fish is looking really good and the kelp is beginning to emerge now as you add background color. The composition is well thought out.

My husband used to SCUBA dive too when we were stationed in Turkey. Wonderful clear water, he loved it.

Looking good so far ! I have some marvelous photos from a scuba diving friend and I'm trying to get the courage to paint one with water colors. I've done some of them with oil already. I love the underwater scenes, it's a whole new world out there .

Hi everybody, thanks for your comments! I'm having a lot of fun with building up a gradual wash in the background. There's some kelp in there after all!

Wish I could get the color balance right on my camera though... he's really a brighter orange.

I like the diagonal line the kelp is adding to the composition.

Congratulatioins on your first wip! I like your composition... indicates good planning... Your fish has a wonderful pouty expression and his colour is excellent... Watching you develop this will be fun!

I love your fish!! Please tell me how many washes did you do on him, and how many on the water. Being new to this watercolour game I thrive on ALL the info I can get
