Lobster for dinner

MY IMAGE(S):

GENERAL INFORMATION:
Title: Lobster for dinner
Year Created: 2006
Medium: Acrylic
Surface: Board
Dimension: 12x16
Allow digital alterations?: Yes!

MY COMMENTS:
When I finished this one yesterday, I was not sure I will post it here. Too many things wrong. I took a look again this morning and finally thought it could be shown. It is better to take our distance from this attempt; it is really ugly when your are close enough to smell it!

In this one, I tried to push lights and shadows at their maximum (for me). Not sure I have succeeded but anyway ...

I know there are some perspective issues in the front boat particularly.

About the title, there was an article in the local newpaper lately which talks about "Haiku" (do a google search). A Haiku is a short poem of three sentences (for the purist, the first sentence must have 5 syllables, 7 for the second and 5 for the last sentence). I've decided that, from now, my painting title are going to be short poem (until I change my mind). That add another dimension to a painting.

The title of this one might be (I reserve the right to work again my title):

Au détour du jour (At the end of the day)
Les guerriers se reposent (warriors at rest)
Homards au menu (Lobsters for dinner)

Have a nice day everyone.

MY QUESTIONS FOR THE GROUP:
Anything. Be honest, I can take it! If it is bad bad bad, then say so!

Hello there...For me your painting is almost perfect...the water and boats are wonderful, my comments are to the path up...better do the strokes the width of path, and not length direction. and the two orange spots on wall jump to much to front. good composition. I want to be there right now...Ronni

The perspective issue notwithstanding, this is a good piece. The brush work and colors are very good indeed. I like the style, it's not ugly, it's impressionistic to a degree. Fix the front boat, and it will be excellent.

The academic points have been made. I like the painting very much. Its impressionistic style is very appealing. It has a masterful feel to it that goes beyond its issues of rule.

If you take your Haiku and add a 14 syllable line to it you get a Tanka

The Painting

Errant perspectives
Block forms skewed and lovely
Skim choppy waters

Liquid dreams now captured
This long dance of boats at sea

Re: Lobster for dinner

Speaking for the lobsters... let my people go. (Just joking).

I really like this too and enjoy the touch of impressionism. My favorite parts are the wharf and the smaller boat, including their colors. The larger boat is fine although it's a little distorted (the front windows, the angle of the bow compared to the stern).

Quebec City must be a beautiful place to be a painter. I visited Montreal once, which I know isn't the same, and I think French Canada is very inspirational.

Re: Lobster for dinner

Thank you for your comments.

Ronni, I agree about the orange spot. It was not "really" intentionnal. I was trying to put some lightson the wharf. Orange came out. Not really the color mix I wanted but I've left it there. Maybe I shouldn't.

Thanks Tony.

Corby, is there any area where you're not good at?

Lobster, sorry for using your copyright term!

I'm not born in Quebec City but live there for about 20 years now. I went to New York, Boston, San Francisco (everybody agrees that SF is one of the most beautiful city of America) and discover very good places there. Montreal is also a really nice city (about 2˝ hours drive from Quebec City). I went to Paris, Geneva, Firenze, Lisboa, Sevilla and also find great place there.

But last summer, I was walking in the street of old Quebec City, just as a tourist might do. Just trying to look at things like an artist would do. And I realize how beautiful my hometown is! Strange how we sometimes don't see the obvious things ... BTW, if you plan to visit Quebec city, don't worry about the language, you will be understood in English everywhere...

Have a nice day everyone.
