marri resin in recycled frame

Similar to the last I posted. This one is to replace one of those that sold recently. I have been using recycled frames of late. With this frame I stripped it back but left traces of its history... a layer of orange, then white, then brown. It is sealed with Birchwood Casey gunstock finish, which is an interesting varnish to use if you have never tried it.... you smooth it on with your fingers. With sucessive layers it looks like a two part epoxy but does not scratch white, so its great for furniture. anyhow, I digress. This is the first of this type I have done in marri resin.... I like the red tone of it.

72x56mm Marri resin on masonite board in recycled frame, with a dab of two of white enamel.

The frame really adds to the painting.

Re: marri resin in recycled frame

In this series with recycled frames the frame is very much part of the art. The frame is fixed in place and sealed with silicon rubber at the back before I start working with the resin.

Nice piece of work Bill! And nice frame touches too. The painting looks like you stopped at the ideal moment and the resin colours are great.

It also has a "restrained fingerpainting" feeling to it, which I love. I am still inspired to this day by my experiences as a child finger painting at school - even mention it in my bios and artist statements. Were fingers your tools for the swirling, or is that something you want to avoid with your natural resins?

Cheers!

Re: marri resin in recycled frame

Hi Rick, definately finger painting - nothing works as well to get a simple but varied and interesting effect. I slap on rubber gloves mix my gesso by hand straight on the board. As it gets creamy I start to vary the direction, depth, width of the tracks I am making in the gesso. The resin goes on later.

I like this - the finger painting freedom and energy, the resin treatment and the recycled frame is a great complement to the piece
