Re: Weekly OP Sketch Thread March 2-8
Wow, Lacey! That's a huge canvas! Neat painting. Sounds like now you can just relax and enjoy all the movies. Way cool. And you're pretty.

Great painting, Lacey and It looks like so much fun. I also like the sketch of your friend and how you incorporated the background.

That's striking, Lacey. The background is so complex and effective. I think you have a strong likeness there too, she looks so quirky and interesting. Great sketch!
Today I'm going to try to finish my sunset with boat.

Re: Weekly OP Sketch Thread March 2-8
Ari sleeping in the sunpatch. Pentels on ProArt sketchbook paper, 4" x 6" -- basically a fast life sketch of my cat. He moved halfway through it while I was working on his head so I had to rely on the webcam photo I snapped before I started. Only about a five minute sketch.
He tends to move without waking up, will just move his head, then turn and lay the other direction or something without bothering to get up. Like Gemini, he really loves the sunpatch and at this time of morning it's right across the bed.

Today's plein air, another study of Freemantle Gate, this time the base of one of the pilasters and in Senneliers, on Sennelier Oil Pastel Pad, 160 lb 340 gsm, 12 x 16.75 inches (30 x 40 cm).
I know, landscape in the portrait orientation, tut, tut

Lacey, fantastic large painting (how do you keep from bumping into one another). Wonderful sketch.
Robert, great 5 minute sketch!
Howard, Love the way you capture those tiny shadow bands that define the shaped stone.

Re: Weekly OP Sketch Thread March 2-8
Lacey - I really love your huge painting from the film festival. It also looks to have been great fun to do - hopefully it will bring you more commissions.
Thanks, Bill and Pat, for your comments. It was strange today, because although I started off with some rather formal perspective sketching, once I switched to the OPs I found myself working in a much less formal way.
I have a DVD by Jane Corsellis of her painting (in oils) coastal landscapes, and she creates complete chaos on her canvas, and then you gradually see order and the image being revealed. That is the antithesis of the way that I have worked all my life, having started really from architectural doodling/drawing.
Yet today with the OPs I found myself almost losing the perspective sketch as I developed the stone and its colours, then as I worked that, I surprised myself at bringing the image out of it. Maybe it was just the cold...
Howard.

Re: Weekly OP Sketch Thread March 2-8
Thanks! I'm getting better at drawing my cat. One of these times I'll do another serious painting of him, probably from a photo though but possibly from one of my gestures.
Howard, I love that pillar. You captured the feel of the stone perfectly in all its details. That would count for 100 Stones even though it's huge, there are already carved stones in it. Go ahead and post it to the project! It's gorgeous!

Re: Weekly OP Sketch Thread March 2-8
Hi everyone
Nice flower sketch Robert, I like the pink coreopsis, she is charming, the composition of the flower and the backgrounds is perfect.
Barbara, thanks for sharing your experiment results, on the first slight, I like the craypas one, which it really standout, but after closer look, ya, Sennelier gives smoother texture.
Yusuke's work is always my favorite, the plate of shortcake is nice, I think I can find that plate at Malaysia too, and the opaque feel of the cake is really impressive.
Lacey's friend portrait is awesome! I like that style very much.
Howard, Nice! the yellow reflection on the rock is it sunlight? Good feel of reflections for me.
This week I had produce two scenery sketch, both scene was take place at Taiwan.
MUNGYO OP on white paper 12' x 8.5' . I am not sure what paper is that, but it seems not very good to blend OP, the surface is a bit smooth, but anyway, OP can be paint on any surface, here is my sketch.

Re: Weekly OP Sketch Thread March 2-8
Thanks for the comments, Robert, Pat, Bill, Lacey and Hean Kuan.
Lacey,
I enjoyed the photographs of your live painting. Great large painting!
The portrait of your friend Vicki is also nice. I like the composition with bar counter in fine perspective.
Robert,
Your compliment always makes me smile, thank you! Well, you captured your cat in such a short time, amazing...
Howard,
Nice pilaster sketch. You did sgraffito for details? The combination of these details and yellow-gray colours put the elegance.
Hean Kuan,
You expressed the atmosphere of Taiwan. Very vivid expression.
I have sketched a stainless steel cup on a table. Senneliers on a brown paper.

Re: Weekly OP Sketch Thread March 2-8
Thanks for more comments.
The yellow patches are lichens growing on the stone, not sunlight, I am afraid.
I thought about using sgraffito to put in the cracks and surface detail, but in the end managed to get some nice fine near-black lines drawn. I didn't really have time to lay down a dark base layer to have made the sgraffito effective, and because I was just painting through the chaos it was a bit hard to plan that far ahead!
Yusuke - your stream of miniatures is simply exquisite, although I think the stainless steel cup has to be one of your best yet (even though for once we cannot eat it!).
Howard.

Re: Weekly OP Sketch Thread March 2-8
Hean Kuan, your street scenes are amazing. I'm impressed you can condense a complex urban scene that much and make it make sense. I've never even tried doing urban landscapes for that reason, but you manage to make both of them so coherent and vivid. It's wonderful.
Yusuke, you outdid yourself on the shining steel cup. It holds so much detail and complexity n its reflections that it really shows an entire scene and not just the one lovely object you drew. Fabulous, even beyond your usual tasty treats.
