Re: Cheetah! Moyo chasing the lure
You won't put the quarry in will you? It looks so good when we have to imagine what it's chasing.
This is one of my favourites of yours (and that's saying something - there are so many!!!)

Re: Cheetah! Moyo chasing the lure
I forgot to subscribe to this thread, and looky what I missed! It looks gorgeous. Thanks for sharing the WIPs. Someday I'd like to learn how to paint, but for now I just marvel and observe, hoping it works its way in by osmosis.

Re: Cheetah! Moyo chasing the lure
Not on this one Patrick tho many have suggested it, since he was really chasing a plastic bag don't suppose I should be that realistic
I may try it agian and see about a very subtle Tommy leg and hoof right at the edge sometime.
For now coming to grips with the dust is enough...see this shot?
I think the gaps must happen when he's in his 25' leap in the air, and the big puffs happen when back feet dig in...on mine he's running back into dust he's already made and kicking up fresh with the turn...must say it feels right to have this amazing animal in motion at last and not just frozen at a certain point in the stride...but there is a long way to do before I have the technical things under my belt, hence the reason to do more...Thanks so much for looking in I appreciate it...wish I could get a better photo...

Re: Cheetah! Moyo chasing the lure
When WC migrated to the new server the final painting got lost, and anyway I did more to it. Now it's varnished, so I can't do any more and this really is the final. I'm going to do a print, but it will be cropped shorter than the original...so the original stays original.
This is the best photo I can get, and many subtle values are still missing, and the background is not one solid color as it shows here
I finally did a painting I really like Patrick, lets see, about 1 in 200 I'd guess, not bad

Re: Cheetah! Moyo chasing the lure
Thanks everyone for looking in and sharing this with me.
I got the dust by very careful mixing of warm and cool and controlling the values. and I know it's weird, but I've spent hours looking at dust and trying to understand it , I had a group of 3 horses in the pasture next to my cottage, and I used to really watch the dust as the grass dried in the summer, and they used to roll, and run around...it is facinating stuff, how it moves and forms and casts shadows on itself...I also have to dust alot, it gets on everything, at least now it's worth it for this painting.

Re: Cheetah! Moyo chasing the lure
Wonderful! I wish I could see it in person. I'm sure the digital does it no justice at all.

Re: Cheetah! Moyo chasing the lure
This came out so beautifully! And I think largely because of the time & effort you took with the dust- isn't that something? I may never look at housework the same....

Re: Cheetah! Moyo chasing the lure
thanks Lauri, yes dust does have a different meaning now, at least something good came out of it. The land I live on is old riverbottom so its very light and sandy soil that is great for plants and when the horses smash down the grass it lifts in little puffs just from a walk, so running really kicks it up. I think I'm going to try some more from this series....maybe more cheetah and less dust next time:-)
