Aerosol -- The latest work

It's been awhile since I've posted but I have been working. Here's my latest piece. Enjoy!

The original sketch was hand drawn and inked in Illustrator using custom brushes. The outline was imported into Photoshop and painted using a minimal collection of brushes. No filters were used.

The lightning was a 4 step process:
  1. Draw the lightning with a hard round 1 pixel brush.
  2. Draw first glow using a soft round 5 pixel brush set to 20% opacity.
  3. Draw second glow using a soft round 25 pixel brush set to 10% opacity.
  4. Draw third glow using a soft round 55 pixel brush set to 5% opacity.
I opted to create the glow in this manner since it lends itself to a more organic feel then the mechanical feel the standard glow filter projects. With this process I can vary my brush strokes or emphasize certain areas of the lightning. If I used the standard glow filter it would be completely uniform and look very mechanical.

Keep in mind that the brush sizes and opacity values I gave may change based on your image's dimensions. You will need to experiment with brush sizes and opacities to get the best effect for your specific artwork. You may even choose to turn my 4 step process into a 5 step or even 10 step process. It's all up to you.

John,

Most of the process was unplanned. I did not have a mental blueprint as to how the final result would turn out. I just started painting and the personality of the piece started to form. Once the painting's personality was apparent it was pretty easy to add elements that reinforced what the painting was saying to me.

I am not usually drawn to art like this. However, this is incredibly interesting. I would hang this in my den or study. The more you look, the more you see. I like it.
