Paul, like you I just dive right in to my sketches. That way I'm can quickly test out the composition/gesture. When it came to the final piece, since I was using a photo, I did measure proportions with a grid, which is a new technique for me.

It really helped, because I've done a number of sketches of that model, and I was basically doing a binary search (oops, nerd-speak!) on her leg length -- too long, too short, a little less too long, a little less too short...

BTW, RG, you're right, a lot of dancers have disproportionately long legs, including my models. It's a leggy bunch!

RG, get your wife to post, too, I love Degas!
