Re: Project Discussion: NATIONAL PARK CHALLENGE
Here is my second watercolour monotype of the winter view from the shore of Astotin Lake at Elk Island National Park:
Please help me out, by either letting me know which of the following titles you like best for it, or suggest a new one: - Cold Islands
- Cold Silence
- White Silence
- Cooling Off
- No Man . . .
- Ready for the Thaw
All too obvious?

Re: Project Discussion: NATIONAL PARK CHALLENGE
Nice monotype, Rick. I just have to say, I hate coming up with titles, so good luck on that - I guess my favourite is "Ready for the Thaw" but it doesn't really suit the feeling of the image. Do you mean "No man is an island" kind of quote for "No Man..." or something else?

Re: Project Discussion: NATIONAL PARK CHALLENGE
Thanks Amie. It looks like very few people like coming up with titles!
I've never really had to name my art, but I figure it's just another part of the process, so time to start. I didn't really like any of the titles I'd come up with very much. And yes, "No man..." was cut from "No man is an island" but it was too corny for me - even cut short.
In the end I think I'll try "Permafrost".

Re: Project Discussion: NATIONAL PARK CHALLENGE
In school we did a really great exercise... we each pinned up a handful of drawings / paintings / prints, and each person in the class made a list of 10 titles that they thought would be good for the image set we chose, and then pinned them up next to the art. Since there were 12 folks in the class, we all had 110 titles by the end of the hour. I still have mine, it's so helpful sometimes to have a bit of outside suggestion. Even if I don't use one of those titles, they help me think of others!
I'd be happy to write ten titles for anyone who wants them.

Re: Project Discussion: NATIONAL PARK CHALLENGE
Hi all, I have finally posted some progress images on the page
http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/...s&proj_id=1170
Sorry it has taken so long to get here, Curtis, but I haven't given up! Just too much going on in my life. I expect everyone on the list is at some stage in meditating on their print, I hope this will be a reminder. The piece I have posted is just a test print, I still hope to do the full 6x9 print, but it will have to wait until I get back from the UK in July.

Permafrost
Good choice of title, Rick...I couldn't think of one either. I think it has to come from the motivation of the artist, a good exercise in getting in touch with the source of our inspiration.

I like the watery effect, Chris, did you put water on the plate before you did the impression, or just drew and used pretty wet paper?

Lynn,
I really like where it's going. It captures the feeling of the old WPA prints for the national Park System. I wish I had your eye!

Re: Project Discussion: NATIONAL PARK CHALLENGE
Thanks, Curtis, that was what I had in mind, and the colours of Killarney Park fit right in with that approach. We'll see how it ends, I can still mess it up with the reduction!

Re: Project Discussion: NATIONAL PARK CHALLENGE
Hello Lynn
the Killarney studies are looking great, simplied forms that really capture the feel and sense of place in them
great to see someone else experimenting with combination of relief surfaces
I am working on a few multiple colour images at moment using this technique (scratchfoam, cardboard and lino...I may even throw woodcut into the mix). The works are part of the "Wilderness" series of studies I am creating for my Ontario Arts Council grant. This time around though I am using oil based ink and my press in the process.

Re: Project Discussion: NATIONAL PARK CHALLENGE
Thanks, Brian, I find that photoshopping the photograph using the filter 'cutout' really helps to visualize how to simplify things. Then I work from the original photo during the cutting.
I was trying out this method for another reason, too, I want to use a modified process of this to teach my relief print mini-course next winter, so did this series handrubbed as my students will have to. But for the large print I will certainly use the press, my arm is scolding me today!
This was also my first try at using the Richeson easy-cut lino. It was very good to use, a bit floppy once cut, so it might be better mounted, but so far it is printing OK. And much easier on my arthritis than conventional lino.

By Chickinishing River I
Lynn-
Glad to see your post, it's looking great, so far!
...was disappointed only 4 showed on up for Earth Day reveal day, then no real comments on "em til yours..... had been checking back every week since!
(life happens, I know )...
Here's hoping you start a trend!
You wouldn't know it to look, but my source photo was an old gov.ca black & white photo of the falls....and your'e right, I drew first, and then kind of "over-watered" it a bit on the printing of it...but wanted to make that special date, so submitted it!
...at least I learned how to handle water-colour crayons + water better...(just hope I remembe the "how" for next time )!
Cheers!
