Hi,
I'm new here, too, and I'm not very experienced with colored pencil -- although I'm learning!
I like Prismacolor for rendering bright, shiny stuff and Polychromos for doing things with more texture. Also, Polychromos seems to "mix" better than Prismacolor -- for instance, if I layer red and blue, I'm more likely to get purple than I am with Prismacolor.
However, if I go too dark with Polychromos, that's all she wrote. No way to lighten up unless I erase. Prismacolors seem to be agreeable to lightening with additional colors, though.
I sorta asked this same question in another thread, and a couple of people suggested I read the "stickies." They are helpful!

Hi Drizzt,
You can check the stickies at the top of our forum for lots of good product information. Personally I use Prismacolor pencils but have just acquired a new set of Van Gogh's which I also like very much and they don't appear to have the 'wax bloom' associated with Prisma's. Others here have their own preferences also.
Hope this helps some. Welcome to the Colored Pencil (cp) forum!!!

Okay. I'm going to talk to you in SPITE of that user name. Hehe. Sorry. After years of online gaming, I cringe at every Drizzt I see, since they are usually 15 year old boys who r leet liek Jeff k. I'm guessing you're a Salvatore fan.
Anyhow, welcome to WetCanvas!
I use Prismacolor pencils. I think you'll find that they are the most popular, followed closely by Derwents, then Polychromos. If you are looking to buy some CPs, I'd recommend going to ebay and bidding on a larger boxed set. You can usually get a great deal (around 50% off retail) on them. Mostly, you'll find "new in box" sets of Derwents and Prismas on ebay. I own some Derwent watercolor pencils and enjoy them, but Prismas are my preference. I get open stock cheap from the local Utrecht store, so they are also convenient.

Hehe. It's okay. I just played a lot of Ultima Online and can't begin to count the number of Drizzts, Rand Al'Thors, and Gandalfs that I ran into. Nine times out of ten, they were under the age of 15.
So, I just had to rib our new CP forum member.

Welcome to WC Drizzt. I've been experimenting with several different types of colour pencils over the last few weeks and so far I have found that I like the Faber-Castell Polychromos better than anything else. They aren't too waxy and the colours are quite bright.
I find the wax is too heavy in the Prismacolours for the most part. Unless your doing alot of burnishing, then the heavier wax is a big help. I can't burnish very well with the polychromos. The derwents I'm only just now working with so I'll have to let you know about those.

I too Love the Polychromos. They are oil based so you don't have to worry about wax bloom at all. I also recently got a set of Bruynzeel design fullcolor's which are also oil based. They are a bit more chalky than the ploy's but give wonderful rich colour.
Hope this helps.

personally I use and love Prismacolor. I like the "painterly" look I get with them and to be honest I can't afford new brands right now anyway. But I've always loved Prismacolor (think I can be a spokesperson )
