RPG Portrait

Hi everyone. I'm an amateur that enjoys art as a hobby, and I'd love any help concerning this portrait I did. It's meant to be used for a computer fantasy RPG game. This means that it will need to be cropped, so the shirt sleeve going out the bottom left corner shouldn't be a problem. I'm particularly concerned about things like the proportions or the shape of the head since I did it from a random sketch I made and with no photo reference. 0_x I also have limited color theory experience so any criticisms there would be helpful as well.

Another bit of feedback I'm interested in is what gender you feel the subject is. All of the people who have commented on it have said that it is the opposite of what I meant it to be... which makes me sure I'm doing something wrong. ^_^

The image is a digital medium and was made with Photoshop CS. Thank you so much for your time!
