portrait of a friend

This was done last second as a gift, so I didnt spend as long as usual on it and its too late for changes.
Any comments or critique for future work appreciated. I feel the result is a touch bizarro, which I like, but would prefer to have control over how when why that element turns up.
thanks for looking!

Re: portrait of a friend

The gaze is very intense. That along with the very dark background does give it a sinister look.
The eyes probably need a slightly darker tone overall which would reduce the staring effect. Were the eyes so wide open in the ref? If so it is always going to look pretty stark.
C&C always welcome.
